I feel your anger.
When taking photo's in a park here in the middle of a summers day even with 4 friends a group of people surrounded us and asked me to hand over my camera. ( they basically just wanted to steal it ).
When the adrenaline kicks in you're in 2 minds to run or swing for them. In this instance I chose option 1 but often wish I'd opted for the latter.
In the spirit of wanting to keep photography alive, should you have a paypal account send me a message and I'll start the potential ball rolling by donating $5 towards your repairs / new body.

I edited your post for you ;-)

Not positive about this...but getting a real gun in Australia could prove problematic. I seem to recall that their gun laws are even more stringent than those we have in Canada.

Aww.. that is a drag! Wow, you were lucky to get away. sucks that people have to be so mean like that. Glad it was just the camera and not you that got hurt. Because we humans are priceless. (hug)

I am glad you're ok! A gun is not the answer we have ound this out in south Afria! Too many people end up being shot by their own guns, and then the criminal has a weapontouse on the next person. I amafraid it is a case of be aware, at all times never shoot alone, mostly if ido shoot alone i go to places you have to pay to get in, not fool proof but safer. even on advertising shoots they now give us security gaurds for outdoor shoots.
but the most important thing is stay safe!

What a horrible way to be reminded that your happy childhood memories must stay just that-memories....

As you are I'm extremely glad you where not hurt. Truama should wear off in a few days and you'll get back to normalcy all the wiser :)

Any chance that if you change your registration number that they would be able to trace it back to the old one? hope not. Then changing the number would be a nice safety step to take. Maybe you can get a temp. one the same day you apply.

A. Mate, glad you are ok
B. Not sorry about your camera...in fact would appreciate it if you could post a map of how to get to this place for the benefit of Jason, Manny, Shannon, et al:)

To our American cousins, things like this happen...everywhere...doesn't mean we run out and get guns. We learn to be more careful and move on...but I do like the suggestion about the German Shephard.

Just to be clear, not all Americans favor carrying a gun. This one, for example, doesn't.

Enzo, forget the German Shepherd. Just fly me to visit you. I'm a reasonably big guy, I'm a decent conversationalist (just don't ask me to sing), and I can even carry gear. And then I can watch you and steal your secrets. :)

Don't ask him to sing. Really. He means it.

If you must, ask him to sing solo.

...so lo no one can hear him.

I so appreciate this...but it shouldn't be necessary...thanks so much for the gesture

What a rotten and scary time. I am glad that you didn't get hurt in all that madness.

Man, I told that hitman just to take your camera and keep it for a while so we all could stand a chance in these challenges, but I guess he got carried away. :P

Seriously, glad to hear you're ok.

I don't need to go to Australia to get my camera wet.

thats scary...i always tell my girl friends to keep pepper spray on them, just to be safe, maybe consider self defense calsses? when i was in high school i was part of a youth prgram with local law enforcement, we talked about self-defense and such, when it comes down to it, do what you gotta do and dont ever be afraid to fight.

glad youre okay, and that it didnt come to a fight

I'm gonna have to think of a punishment for our next GTG.

Enzo that's so scary, I'm glad to hear you're OK. You've made me have a rethink, I often shoot on my own at night, I just like the night and so far have found night people to be nicer than day people...but perhaps it's time to get myself a Rottie for company.

Sad news about your camera but I'm so glad that's all that was damaged, get back shooting asap.

I often think to myself "I should not be out here alone with my camera."..... I am so sorry it happened to you. I am glad that you are safe....that is the most important.

Enzo, if there is anything you need, please PM me. Prayer is all I can offer from here, but please just ask if you need anything from here... I know I am far away, but maybe we can find a way to replace your camera, and pray for the perpetrator??

Always

Michael

Hi Everyone,

Sorry this is a long post, but I had a very harrowing experience in the early hours of this morning around 5:45am.

I went down to Williamstown beach just before dawn to take a couple of images - one for the Earliest Childhood Memory challenge, and another for the Free Study. It was dark there and I was alone, but it is a suburban beach and I thought I would be safe.

I was standing with my tripod on a large drainpipe when this really unsavoury character suddenly appeard and asked me if my images were good. I said yes, and then my heart started racing. I was trapped on the drainpipe and he could have cleaned me up. He then got aggressive and asked, "Why are you taking pictures of us for?" There were a few more expletives in there... I told him I wasn't and quickly started packing up my stuff. He kept asking the same question. I am amazed he didn't come right to me. In my nervous panic to get off the beach and to my car, I dropped the D200 in the water. I quickly got it out, but it is DEAD now.

I got to my car, he went in the opposite direction. I said thanks to God that this guy didn't bash me.

I drove away and suddenly realised this guy was following me...the heart was racing. He stayed with me and then drove next to me demanding I pull over. "Why did you take photos of us? Give me the film!" I was trying to reassure him I didn't take photos of him as we drove next to each other at speed, but he wouldn'r listen. "You're lying, pull over" Being early morning there were not many cars around. I decided I would drive to the nearest police station, but that was 15 km away! At one set of red lights he got out and bashed my window with his torch, I drove off, he ran back to his car. From then on, I increased my speed...we were moving! I went through every red light and stop sign, he was undaunted and followed me. To make matters worse, I had left my cell phone at home - NEVER GO ANYWHERE WITHOUT A CELL PHONE!

He followed me all the way to the police station. I went right into the driveway, he stayed on the road. On my way to the front door, I tried to get a registration number, but he drove off. I thought he might be parked somewhere waiting to follow me. Stayed at the police station till I calmed down. There was not a lot they could do because I had no registration number. Thankfully, I got home in one piece. I am really shaken up. I am a little scared that if he is a criminal, he might get access to my details through my registration number. He was probably up to something with the girl in his car, or he might have been doing some drug deal or something. I had the widest lens on my camera in any case, but that wouldn't have mattered to him.

It was traumatic. God protected me from something that could have ended in disaster.

The D200 is now dead. It was submerged in water for a few seconds. I will be out of the challenges for a little while till I can get it repaired or even get a replacement. Unfortunately it is not insured.

MY ADVICE:

1. Never do this kind of photography alone. Take a friend.
2. Always have a cell phone
3. Never stand in a place that someone could trap you...
4. Be aware of who might be around...even quiet secluded places have people hiding out doing all sorts of stuff.

I thank God, it wasn't worse than this, but it was a costly lesson,

Enzo

I don't think they allow the general public to own/carry guns in OZ anymore do they? That's probably why criminals are so bold. They know they won't be encountering any firearms and if they think they're physically superior, you're in big trouble. I'd bet public ownership of tasers would be restricted too.

Darn Enzo, I hate to hear this. Glad to hear you came out alright. Cameras can be replaced, you and your Blue Ribbon "MoJo" are one of a kind and we can't afford to lose you. :) Since this character followed you right to the coppers I'd really review my security arrangements if I were you. Carry that cell with you anywhere you go over the next couple of weeks. Watch your back and keep everything locked up tight. If he was willing to go right up to the police station it means he wasn't rational. Hopefully this means he'll be too stoopid to get your registration and figure out where you live. Good luck man.
