I haven't forgotten. :) The weather and "surroundings" have improved here bunches and bunches in the past week. I'm just waiting and hoping . . .

I have a couple, but I'm still trying to get a better shot. Now that everything isn't covered in snow I can get one! I still have the due date as March 23, is that right?

Here are a couple for Mississippi. Some of these are new shots and some are previous challenge entries / outtakes.

Question for Florida... would most people rather see the tropical fun side or the swampy foresty side? I know FL is known for it's beaches (there are a lot!) but there are other things to it...

Swamps rule. I suggest we change the whole concept to "Swamps of the 50 states".

I think we are playing it by ear, some people wanted to get some wildflowers in their shots so we are waiting for spring! (plus, I need to grass to be a little greener, I do live in the Bluegrass state... :) )

Sounds good. haha! Good to get some votes on the issue. I actually live about 10 minutes from the beach and 10 minutes from the swamp. :)

These are awesome! At first this one grabbed my eye, but I think I like this one the best, beautiful colors!

I will be taking some shots probably next week. Too busy with two jobs, I couldn't get out to take some nice NJ photos, but I will post something next week ;)

Stand by for NJ :D

These are just a few I took at the park a few days ago. When I went through and picked my favorites, they both happened to be in portrait orientation, but the shot I'm hoping to get eventually are of some beautiful horse farms so those will probably all be landscape orientation.

Ashley, I looked up a few people from Illinois and sent them PMs asking if they'd consider picking up the state of Illinois. I have some decent shots of Chicago, but they're in the wrong format.
Hope you don't mind.

I can take Illinois.

Hello ApertureAshley & everyone!

I think I can represent Alabama, & I did get that PM but lost it before I could reply. It might be worth mentioning that I am not native to Alabama, & I am a Yankee, but I can probably get a nice landscape for you at Wheeler Wildlife Refuge (probably not before the deadline of Mar. 23rd, though). Judging by what's been posted so far, your poster is going to represent the scenic wonders of each state, right? Alabama became a state Mar. 2, 1819 under President Monroe. Huntsville, where I live, was the first state capital, but only for the 1st year of statehood. Big Spring Park is named after an underground spring that John Hunt, Huntsville's founder, built a cabin next to in 1805. During the 19th Century and the first half of the 20th Century, the spring was Huntsville's water source. I could also send a picture of this natural spring.

Have you come to a decision about the focus of the poster? Landscapes? All portrait or all landscape, or are you going to mix it up?

I've been trying to figure out a way to make the photos fit the pattern of stars on the flag, but the way they are "nested" it's going to be hard to do without the photos starting to overlap each other, unless they are quite (too) small.

I wonder if it would work to use a pentagonal mask to crop them; they'd be close to a square or circular crop, but could be made much larger that way. Or we could use a star-shaped mask, which would look cool but eliminate most of whatever is not right in the center, though the stars could be made a lot larger than the actual ones on the flag without overlapping.

If we use the pattern for the layout, especially if we are listing the states in order of admission, I doubt that the portrait orientation would work.

I been playing around with your star idea, but have been using paint shop pro. I can make a star selection and crop it to a star, but lose some of the image. I will try some other things see if I can help ya out.

Something else I tried in CS3 was used shape tool. Used solid star, selected it and saved my selection. Then deleted the shape layer. I inverted and filled with what ever color you want. Just droped the opacity, this way you don't any of the picture and still have whole image. Just a thought.

Do shots need to be taken within a certain timeline?
03/17/2008 08:28:52 AM · #46
As of right now there is no timeline, I want everyone to have the chance to get great shots and I know the scenery hasn't been too great! So, we're waiting on spring!

As far as what orientation, since we don't know exactly how we're doing the poster, it would be best to take pictures in both orientations, this way we have more options. I understand some people were going to submit photos they had already taken, in which case they will only have one orientation. This is completely fine, we will do our best to fit it into the poster, although some cropping may be required :)

Thanks again to everyone who signed up and thanks to those who are helping to fill the gaps! I have no doubt that when this is all finished, we will have a GREAT poster!

snowflakejen & pixelpig, I have you both added to the list, thanks for joining!!

Basically we just need a landscape photo of your state, one that kinda embodies the feel of your state.

good to know there's no deadline. i've been struggling this last weekend to get a good shot out of connecticut, but it hasn't been cooperating.
