$2/month/picture is outstanding, or perhaps astounding -- great work!
I think $1/picture/year is more the "industry standard" for microstock. |

Originally posted by thomasd007: I took a look at your portfolio and there are in fact some great stock shots in there. You never know what will sell, but I have to be honest and stock isn't for everyone. A person does typically have to take different types of photos than they maybe normally would to make decent earnings. For me this is a part of the fun and challenge.
I took up photography barely over a year ago, heard about microstock last summer, so I began uploading. I can't imagine if I hadn't decided to do it. I have so much fun trying to think up new concepts. I still have a fairly small portfolio of about 90 pictures, but make a little over 200 dollars a month and steadily increasing.
I figured I had nothing to lose, because if I didn't enjoy it or there wasn't money to be made I could just stop uploading. If someone is interested, I highly recommend they read my tutorial at www.sprintingturtles.info and take the plunge. I really feel if a person gives it a try and sticks with it for at least 2 months they will never look back. I do want to warn people, checking for new downloads is highly addictive and will consume lots of time.

Thanks! I think I have maybe four shots that are worthy of microstock, based on what I see in others' portfolios there. At a dollar a picture a year, I'm thinkin' it may not be especially worthwhile for me to wander into that pool. :-) Appreciate all the input, though! |

Don't know where you got that statistics. I'm definitely not one of the big guys in microstock, but my average at istock is approx. $0.80/picture/month. my top 5 shots there have 20 - 30 downloads each month. Now have a look at nico_blues portfolio at istock for comparison.
My top selling photo at Shutterstock has been downloaded more than 500 times within 15 months, the next best had more than 200 dls, several others had more than 100 in less time. Now do the math for yourself.

You could still try it at Alamy... all my stuff that is to good for the micros goes there :)

Thanks for putting this up. I think I have a long way to go before I could get accepted to Shutterstock, but I sure would like to. If I actually made any money, my wife wouldn't mind me buying new lenses or upgrading my camera. |

Great tutorials. Now for the newb enquiries.
I have one question that wasn't addressed. File size. What to we actually upload to the stock site? A reworked file with the same file size as the original? Are we responsible for uploading all sizes? Or do they take care of resizing the images?
thanks |

You submit the largest size you are able to provide; upsizing by more than 5% is not permitted at most micros. The smaller sizes are generated by the agencies. |

at eyewave: perhaps this is what generalE was referring to
Microstock monthly earnings poll
most people are between $.75-$3.00
for your shutterstock submission it probably wouldn't hurt to downsize them a little bit so that they are sharper and have less noise that they would otherwise. Depending on the original fize size, but if you are shooting with 10mp I would downisze to 6 mp at least, just for your test images. Otherwise I submit full sized images.

There is a poll going on at talkmicro and it looks like most people earn between 50 cents and 2 dollars per image per month. My portfolio is fairly new and I can see as time goes along older pictures not selling as well so my earnings per image would slowly decrease. Is it worth trying, oh yeah! The nice part is once images are uploaded they keep earning. I went through a strecth of over a month where I only uploaded a couple images and my earnings still went up from about 215 to 230 bucks. My images aren't all that great, but I do try to take pictures that are typical of the stock industry. Multiple microstock sites greatly helps the earnings potential.
As for image size I don't alter mine at all. I agree that if noise or sharpness is an issue at shutterstock then downsize them a bit, since the only requirement is that they are greater than 4 mp. All the stock sites will take your one image and make all the different sizes they offer (that are equal to or less than the original resolution).

Yes, this is my portfolio, a few I am proud of and many that I am nearly embarassed by. With free, professional, reviewer criticism skills improve fairly rapidly.

GeneralE mentioned 1$/year, the poll says 0.75$ - 3$/month |

ah yes.. good point :)
I don't think anyone is earning as low as $1.00/pic/year ... that would be very low. I now wonder where he got that number too.
I think low is $6.00/pic/year, and high is $20.00/pic/year
