I have to reply to this because I thought is was in poor taste in the way it was titled with forum policy. If the OP had searched the forums for previous 'Pet' threads there probably wouldn't have been a problem. (at least with me)
The presentation of the locked thread had direct competition with the challenge.(IMHO) |

Why are people so anal on this site????? You can't post a picture that was inspired by a competition but not entered at all by the person posting which is kind of retarded but hey I can't argue with the "Great ONES" Seich Heil!!! So really you could post the picture you just can't mention the competition a mere technacality of sorts...Seich Heil!!! |

reviving a buried thread with pets of people who ARE in the challenge posted in it to post the same photos would be ok. but starting a new thread is not. i think some hairs are getting split.
perhaps instead of being heavy handed with the thread locks, the OP could have been asked to change the title of the thread to make it acceptable to a few more people. however, i think the title made it clear it was not meant for people in the challenge to post their pets in it so that they wouldn't accidentally break any 'outtakes' rules.
that thread did not take any interest from my voting in the actual challenge, but the locking of it totally put me off voting it.

When I started here, you could post a photo and ask for opinions any time you wanted. The SC removed any that compromised anonymity or looked like someone's entry, but otherwise you were free to (*gasp*) discuss photos on a photography site. I thought it worked pretty well, but people complained that it siphoned off comments, brought down their scores and/or swayed the voters in some way, so a policy was put in place to ban outtakes during voting. Incredibly, there was no surge in comments and people still complained about their scores and swaying voters. The only significant effect I see is a lot more forum threads about personal issues, politics, etc. and less photos to look at. :-/ |

The term is "Sieg Heil" (Hail victory!), pronounced "zeeg hile" (approximately). I find your inference to be just a wee bit of an exaggeration and rather insulting.

Cops say I have to do 55 MPH but I want to do 65 MPH. Seich Heil! The term rules/laws and customs come to mind.

Even the one who locked the thread said, "this is pretty close to a violation of the outtakes rule" (my emphasis). |

What?! You don't see the similarity in the locking of threads and the slaughter of millions of innocent people, huh, me neither.

Locking threads by popular request, I might add. |

She may have said "pretty close," but challenge-related photos have always been considered outtakes even if they weren't entered. |

Strange definition of "outtake," but whatever. By extension of that logic, no photos of any kind should be posted, as there is generally a "Free Study" challenge running. |

would not reviving a thread with photos of pets and posting more in it be challenge related, as well? i'm sorry. i'm just tired of seeing that stupid lock slapped on threads with explanations that don't make much sense to me. i feel like i'm just being argumentative over something that's trivial, so i'll just protest quietly (no pet voting) and go off to bed. nite nite.

479 people have voted to continue the current policy. Take that for what it's worth. |

I'd like to know how many of those 479 know what the DPC definition of "outtake" is.
I'd also like to know why it's such a big deal on a site that only awards virtual ribbons. I mean, who really cares? |

Like I said earlier in the thread,
you want to preserve anonymity,
stop all self portraits except for a self portrait challenge. |

It's worth noting here that we've done research on the outtake rule, and the effect on voting averages in the challenge.
It has been proven beyond doubt that banning outtakes has had zero effect on scores. |

i was one of those 479.
i'm just having trouble fitting non-entrants into the 'outtake' group. i always perceived the outtakes threads as being outtakes from the 'challenge' entrants...serious attempts that were considered as a challenge entry. not me for taking a 'snapshot' of my cat and posting it in a thread (which i didn't get a chance to do before it was locked) about pets that just happened to be the current challenge
like i said earlier, i thought the title of the locked thread made it clear to people who did enter the challenge that they shouldn't post theirs.

i would like my photo to do well...it's not so much the virtual ribbon that comes with that. it does feel nice to know that other people like your photos. i like that the entries are anonymous and that any vote i get is because of the photo and nothing else. |

Someone who either missed the deadline or decided at the last minute not to enter still made a serious attempt at a challenge entry. Likewise, someone who entered a completely different concept/scene from their outtake. What's the difference between those and a challenge-related shot taken outside the dates or by someone with no plans to enter?

I hate the outtake rule, but GeneralE strongly backs it. It's more likely that the opposite is true since ribbons already come with plenty of comments and high votes.
