I like the odds of dealing with 300+ biases rather than just 5.

No offense, FP, but I have the impression (without taking the time to search through the forums to support this impression) that you seem to want to make a lot of substantial changes to this site, and that you strongly persist beyond making the initial suggestion. Then you respond with insults when your suggestions aren't embraced by the people who run the site.

I do believe there are other websites that actually screen a photo before it can appear for comment/voting? This might be more to your liking than the wonderful crapshoot we have here at dpc. |

Juried competitions
This link gives a lot of opportunities for juried (judged) competitions. |

Okay, insult may be too strong of a word. But saying "...so, new suggestions like that can kiss goodbye for a long time, because it ain't gonna happen" implies your a bit ruffled because your suggestions aren't accepted. And like I said, it's an impression I have that this has happened with a couple of your other suggestions in the past month or two.
EDITED to add word "your" in last sentence.

Instead of suggesting that Langdon create a whole bunch of new code for something he probably doesn't want to do, why don't you do it informally?
Just create a thread inviting people to be judges. You pick 'em and organize how you want entries to be submitted. One easy way would be to have everyone post entries in their portfolios in a collection with a constant name, like "Judging challenge 1." Then have your judges judge.
Entry deadlines would be easy to enforce because upload date shows up on portfolio images.
In other words, invest your own time, see whether other people want to play along, and then do it with whoever does.
Then, all the people who have posted above saying they don't like the idea don't need to be involved.
If you get lots of people jumping in, you know you've got something worth pursuing. And if not, then you don't.
Edited to add: Thanks, Melethia. As if I didn't already spend enough time entering photo competitions! ;)

Your responses to those who disagree with you do read as a bit sarcastic. While I respect that may not be your intent, it never hurts to reread a post whith an eye toward how others might perceive it, especially when replying to someone with whom you disagree on an issue.

I do believe me and scalvert have some kind of a good relationship in DPC, and I know my limits when I say something to him, or to my friends here. I certainly didn't mean more than a little joke, and with that joke little truth, but nothing bad. |

ClubJuggle, you too... Well, Let's keep it in some good conversation matter I think. And that comes with a little sarcasm, no harm with that. I have to listen tons of them during other threads, and I don't complain :) |

ALl right FOcus, you think it is so darn easy, why don't you vote on every entry and give a in depth comment on every photo in the February Chalenge.

Yes, you made thoughtful comments on all the images in the challenge. I wouldn't exactly call them in depth.
Good on ya for going as far as you did though.

I think the problem is that your taste is too close to DPC voters, and therefore you get terribly disappointed when it doesn't match...
whereas my taste is so different that I have very few expectations. My suggestion to you is to take some ribbons and some thread... |

Hardly. This has already been proposed and discussed many times. My objection stems from your Reason #1. The goal appears to be to "correct" challenge results that you don't agree with by trumpeting a different set of "respected" opinions. I submit that the more voters there are, the more likely it is to get a true measure of the entries. If one judge out of 5 has a personal bias against HDR, cats or whatever, it would heavily skew the results and invite criticism of the jurors.

I say it would change the outcome in pets results a lot. Disagree, that's fine, but that's what I think, and that's why I suggested what I suggested.
After all, I am not trying to start a fire here. Suggestions go to SC and I know that, I had to make sure I was heard. General discussion probably let me do that. I mean there are too many "other" (I can't call them more than that) subjects here, which this one involves DPC directly, and some of us agreed with me already.
;)

Judging by the comment you left on my shot, the "pick your own top ten", and now this thread, i'm starting to think that you dissagree with the blue ribbon. Of course, if you followed your own advice in #2, i'd know why, instead of just a backhanded compliment.
And what kind of rant will we see if the "professional" judges opinion differs from yours? Just start your own "posthumous" ribbon and YOU can be the 'professional' judge. |

True... Here is my comment to blue ribbon photo, you can always go and check it:
"IMO, this should had not been the blue... It's a very funny shot... but that's about it :(
Congrats, well deserved DPC winner :/"
(That comment is NOT personal, it's a good photo, and I don't know the person who entered it)
Not only pets, but there are some other in the past. And again, I am not talking about my own entry here, but overall winners, becomes pretty much "COM'OOOON!!!" |

If it's a very good shot, why did you say that all it had going for it was that it was funny? I'm curious... |

03/03/2008 03:09:39 PM · #48 |
It's a funny photo; it won because it was funny, not because it was a good pet portrait... When I say "It wasn't a good pet portrait" I am comparing to some others in there.
Let me repeat myself, if there are people reading this for the first time. I suggested this idea not because I am angry to pets challenge, I don't mind to see a funny face won blue and a wonderful excellent photo stuck on 18th 19th places, I don't care. What I want to know is why people gives 3's and 2's to best photos, or 10's to worse photos. What are they thinking, and are they thinking at all. I won't know the answer, would I? so, better of having a contest with selected judges, so I know, whoever enters know, why we get those votes, even with 5 people.
I thought it could be good idea. If it's too much work, or you want to keep it current way, say so, no problem. But keep bringing my own quotes back to me, is not helping. I know what I am saying, or what I suggest... I really don't need a repeat.

Tickets go to the SC. Forum posts go to the very same people you've essentially declared incapable of sound judgement. :-/ |

You might think it didn't deserve the blue but what good does it do to leave that comment? I think your entilted to believe it didn't deserve the blue and your even entitled to leave the comment you did but it sounds like sour grapes. "Congrats, you don't deserve it" is how it comes across, at least to me. |
