I think I am beating you this time. 6.2 ish... should be better than "too little" ;)

Technically, black is the absence of all color, white is all the colors mixed.

White may technically be all the colors mixed...but, they have zero saturation and therefore no hue, such as neutral grays and black...which all but makes those entries DNMC.

Definition:
White

You're both a little far into the textbook you happen to prefer. In common language, both white and black are colors.

What color is the background on DPC image pages? Gray.
What color is the background of the forum posting box? White.
What colors are common to the US, British, and French flags? Red, white, and blue.
What color is the text on this page? Black.
What color is that leather jacket? Black.

Are you really claiming you'd answer "none" for the first two, then "red, zero hue, and blue" for the third, and "absence" for the last two?

Oops - forgot to include my score, which is making me happy, esp. with a glowing comment from HotPasta. And all three comments start with "Excellent." :)

This morning brings me to a new high... not really high, just high for me.

Three comments, all positive, with honest critiques. What is funny to me is that I
had images that would have satisfied each of my commentors. I took nearly 120 for this
challenge and spent hours narrowing them down to the one I posted. I am still a bit
fuzzy on just how much I can edit in a basic editing challenge but I think that since
I have managed almost a full point over my last submission things are looking up.

I am very new to the world of photography (6 months) and even newer to DP Challenge, but so far I have really enjoyed my experience. I entered a photograph in the February open study which I think is doing pretty good for my first entry (6.0 as of this morning with 136 votes in). But I found myself in quite the dilemma when it came to entering a photo in this challenge. I worked on it for hours and couldn̢۪t quite get the quality photo I wanted and in the end decided not to enter. Does anyone else suffer from this syndrome or should I chalk it up to rookie jitters?

[DELETED]

Sorry! new to the site.

Thanks,
SeMpErMarIne

That depends on which school of thought you subscribe to:

- enter as many challenges as possible with an entry that might not be your best work
- selectively enter challenges with entries that you're proud of

Whatever you decide, you'll get feedback in comments and the score - it's up to you as to how you handle that.

I think you should have submitted that photo. I really like the concept a lot (forks spooning) but the DoF is too shallow and the fork heads are out of focus. Might work a bit better upside down, so the heads are in focus and the spooning parts fade out of focus, or just bigger DoF to get it all in.

It's all about learning, although I have to admit that sometimes a poor photo doesn't receive the comments that the photographer needs to learn and grow (and this can be really frustrating if you've spent a lot of effort on the shot).

It's still worth it though... :)

lessons learned with this image? 0, zero, nothing, nada, naranja!!!!!
lessons learned since i've started submitting to challenges? Read above paragraph, it applies here too!

I'm not pissed about this (crappy) score, i'm really pissed about after 119 votes i'm not getting even a single comment!

frustrating? You can't imagine how frustrating is this... And since my spare time is really really shallow i think, as i said above, it doesn't worth it!

Since i was really really sad about my last 3 entries, for this silverware shot i shooted something (IMHO) creative... but hey, who cares!

If i don't get a single comment with this entry don't waste your time next Wed checking my profile, my account will be gone.

If comments are your only measure of learning, then just post random images to the forums and ask for opinions. Otherwise, a lack of comments is its own message: failure to inspire a single voter enough to say something about the image. It's harsh, but it's still a lesson you can learn from. I did.

This was my first entry. I was proud of the picture, but after entry I'm starting to think a lot of people might not fit the challenge perfectly. Live and learn!

You know i was extremely surprised not to see a shot similar to this one i took about a year ago, so surprised that i am kicking myself for thinking it was too cliche to do on this site and that it would be one of about 5 following the same pun:

Currently sat on 6.1ish so cant complain i suppose - at least i tried something new rather than re-hash an old shot.

I think I'm finally starting to see what people mean by "giving the DPC voters what they're looking for." I entered this challenge as a fluke only test a theory of mine. That theory is -- do most of the voters prefer a heavily post-processed image that doesn't look real? I intentionally made my shot (taken in less than 5 minutes and pp'd in less than 10) to appear like it was overdone in pp'ing. I even noted so in my comment section. I even said that I hoped that it would score somewhere in the 4's or lower just to give me confidence in the voters. I admit that the shot sucks - I even left in a stray fiber of some sort that is on my sensor or lens and didn't bother cloning it out!

I'm still sort of gobsmacked that some folks think that a heavily tonemapped image is considered a photo. I would call it some other form of art, but certainly not a photo. Some recent shots that ribboned(a lighthouse comes to mind) is a good example of this.

Ehh, just blabbing here. But here is my score for this one: *shakes head in disbelief*

This should be much lower - at least an entire point or more lower.

I started off good in the challenge around 7 something, then did the dpc drop. I wish they would ask me what floor I would like to stop on :-Þ then my score was down in the low 6's but has came up over the last 24 hours.

Hmm, now you got me thinking.... I'll probably go see now. It's early, why not.

EDIT*

You're right. Sorry for wasting your time. I must have seen a pic while I was searching google images or something. :(

There was one in a recent challenge, just not this one. I remember voting
on it.

Managed to make it over 5.2 now... next goal 5.25
