Besides it's pointless talking to people here. Everyone has their own opinion and when a site suggestion comes up it's ignored by SC until it becomes a fight with other members and then just escalades from there. Usually ending up with someone getting suspended. Ask Leroy He'll tell ya.
I made my pitch and no one bought it. Same as all ideas everyone else has. They are just useless.

I can totally understand wanting to go to bed without this thread continuing. Why sit here an nitpic on the original post starter for his opinions, when he has asked nicely to lock the post and explained why.

Because this is the Web and going to bed is the real world!!! Being the original post starter is irrelevant to how the post ends.

It would be a funny old forum if a thread stopped every time the OP went to bed??

Go to bed dirt we won’t talk about youâ€Â¦much :)

Why? Well, maybe because he started the thread by saying, "In this thread ANYONE can COMPALIN about ANYTHING they want."

So that's what we're doing, just what he said we could :)
Besides, I've always picked on Joe!

G'night Joe, and no snoring, kay?

Not really. If we did, we'd bring on more Site Council members as we have in the past.

You are correct that there is too much to do for any of us to be involved in everything, so we already do split up the work among us. I don't think any of us (even Langdon) try to be involved in everything, but rather we take on the areas where we feel we can be of the most use. As an example, I typically check the ticket queues and reported posts several times a day, but I rarely vote on validation requests. There are others who vote on practically all DQ requests but hate doing the forum work.

What is worth noting, and hasn't been mentioned before, is that forced commenting has been tried before. By most accounts, it was a disaster, and the requirement was removed after only 2 weeks.

The main issue was summed up by drewmedia in the removal announcement:

Yes I would. I don't believe anyone needs to justify there vote to anyone.

The biggest issue that would make me leave the site would be those vocal minority members who forever complain how things aren't fair and they could do things better blah blah blah....you know who I mean.

Very WELL said!

Seeing that the OP went to bed, I feel compelled to jump in here and pick up the mantle, torch or whatever it is. So let's see, where were we...
.......

....

..

woops - the meds kicked in. I can no longer help the cause of the OP.

I will say that the irony of complaining that nobody wants things to change in a thread that has been repeated in one form or another ad nauseum over the 3 years I have been here made me giggle until I burped up some spicey meatballs I had for dinner.

I don't think we're saying we don't want any change, just that this specific one would probably do more damage than good, and if it didn't work with only 2000 members and challenges of half the entries that we have currently, how well could it work now?

Change is good. Change is necessary. Change for change's sake is usually not.

You know what is funny?
When the site owner says ALMOST the same thing I said, the first reaction everyone said was "COOL".

I find that AMAZING!!! My suggestion wasn't even as strict as his.

All drew said was that it was it would get a revision because people were saying it was time consuming. Um well yeah... Try voting 95% on a FS now. That's crazy.

But you know what. My suggestion wouldn't be time consuming. What can't you all see that. My suggestion isn’t arm twisting. My suggestion isn’t demanding. And why can’t it be given a fair shot on the site and just try it?

ACTUALLY. The reason I wanted the thread locked was because even though I have made my pitch not one other person spoke up and said that it MIGHT be a good idea. Instead you all said it was a bad idea. I fought my fight as long as I could and tried to convince others to see what I saw and it wasn't going to happen after 5 hours.

I also noticed that you too would leave the site if you had to comment on 3 or 4 pictures, is that right?

An OP doesn't "own" a thread; once it's out there it remains open for public discussion. We don't lock threads because the OP doesn't get the desired responses/results to their topic. Sorry!

You give the reason that you wanted the thread locked is because no one would agree with you after 5 hours of putting your case forward.

And then doctornick said “ Why? Other people are having their say. Just because you don't agree with other people you want this thread locked? How nice!”

What is the difference here? You just refuse to listen or accept any point of view that is different to your own.

If you are going to put a case forward on anything please be factual in all aspects of your case and never accuse someone of something you have no knowledge of or otherwise your credibility will suffer and then no one will take you seriously!! Now does this sound familiar.

Just a reminder to all that even though this is the Rant area, please don't make any personal attacks...
03/11/2008 08:44:30 AM · #115
Not sure exactly what your asking here. But if you think that I refuse to change my mind because you and doctornick want me to, it's not going to happen.

Like I already said. I plead my case and no one liked it. It's like you want me to keep going. For what though? You already said that if my idea actually came into play you would leave the site. So I know you don't like the idea.

My opinion is that if something is put to a poll, the majority should be given more weight than Dirt_Diver's opinion. Sorry Mr. Diver.

Dirt, you asked about my shot that got the blue ribbon in indulgence

When I submitted it, I fully expected to score in the fours, or at best, low fives. To this day, I am still shocked that it actually ribboned, much less a blue. So, I guess to explain, the 4s and lower to me make perfect sense. I'm still wondering about the temporary sanity of those that voted 7 or higher. I'll take it; I just don't understand it. :)

++++++++

And, no one is making personal attacks, but some of the posts last night were close. Now that daylight has returned to North America, this thread will probably come back to life. :/

Excuse me I misunderstood it while I was trying to get my 2 kids ready for school.

All I was saying is I still think that my idea is a good one. None of you think it is.

Does that clear it up Shannon?

Wow, am I the only one who went to bed and got some sleep last night? ;)

It deserved whatever people gave it. If someone felt that it deserved a 1, so be it... it didn't keep it from winning the blue now, did it? Does a handful of 1s get me wound out of shape? No, not at all. There are always going to be votes that go against the final result. Always. Why lose sleep over it, or jump on the troll bandwagon?

Everyone is pretty much uniformly affected by varying voting patterns, and strangely enough every week the best shots win, and the worst shots lose. In 5 1/2 years of being at DPC, I can't recall a single instance where there was a truly crappy shot that one first place, and some stunningly beautiful shot landed in last. It just doesn't happen, hence my statement: It ain't broken.

Yeah, and then once it got put into place people realized how detrimental the idea was, and it was tossed out the window. On the surface it might seem like a swell idea until you think it through to the honest, real-life implications that would follow, and then suddenly it ain't so cool any more. Live and learn!

The following is not a personal attack but genuine concern for a feellow DPCer

Dirt if you are only getting 4 hours sleep a night you really need some help and I can now understand your irrational behavior in the forums. Lack of sleep can play serious effects on your rational and a good nights sleep is paramount to good health.

Take it or leave it but my advice is that you should sleep more, play more and laugh more because it is all just a game and life is about having fun.

Army training so many years ago. If I sleep more than 4 hours I am extremely tired and can't function correctly. Sometimes I sleep a little more but I have to take naps during the day.
