It can't be that simple. There's a need for everyone to vote according to certain factors. That process should be universal and regimented. Eventually, everyone will vote the same on any given image, so scores will only be integer values. Unfortunately, this will lead to a great number of ties. Since there are only 10 possible scores, at least EVERYONE will be in the top 10! The resulting confusion will lead to the implementation of the 1000 point voting scale which will in turn lead to several more angry threads. After an intense coding effort on the part of the SC, admins and a cadre of ultra Top Secret programmers, the need for voters will be eliminated and the computer will simply determine an image's score immediately upon upload, allowing for hundreds of challenges to be completed during the week. After some whining by DPC members about low scores and no comments, the computer will begin to comment on all photos as well. Unfortunately, this computer will become self-aware, take control of all computerized Military systems worldwide and start global thermonuclear war.
Don't tell me you weren't warned. |

Ah...perhaps the computer will become self-aware...BUT THEN! It will begin making digital images and entering them in challenges becoming addicted to the update function it will create clones of itself and enter even more challenges and feel compelled to comment on 100% of the images while not voting in challenges in which it is taking part. The shear stress of the enigma in which it finds itself will consume all of its processing capabilities and therefore it will not be able to start a global thermonuclear war!
1-Bad 10-Good
I feel like a character in a Twilight Zone episode. :) |

After its final DQ tantrum in the forums, demanding its account be closed, it will then seize control of all computerized Military systems and start global thermonuclear war and plaunge the planet into nuclear winter. |

Okay...and THEN! Having eliminated all the human competition it will start its own site and make images of the new Icelandic-like landscape? :) |

Bing-frigging-O.
When I first came aboard I thought, "Wowie wow wow!!" at a lot of stuff here but I guess I'm jaded now. These green night skies, origami animals, and 80% of the stuff that now winds up on the front page really does nothing for me anymore.
To me it's like a good joke - funny the first 5 times you hear, okay the next 10 and pretty stale the next 5,000; no matter how many different ways it's told. |

Actually, I was sorta kidding.......I love the Iceland shots......8>)
I have learned to be more discerning in the images I pick for my 10s.
I was kind of proud to see that out of the half dozen 10s I gave in the Pet Portrait challenge, none were in the top 3.
It meant that I was more impressed with what I consider substance than eye candy, yet they still did reasonably well anyway.
I've just been taking the whole DPC thing less seriously and my own personal photographic growth more seriously, voters be damned. |

DD, I'm up to page 4 in this thread but I see the same damn comment by you over and over. You want everybody to comment on scores 3 or lower but you consistently repeat that you don't vote lower than a 5 anymore. Are you avoiding commenting on scores lower than 3? It sure looks like it.
Also from what I have read so far you seem to be the only one who wants comments on low scores.... don't you get it?
This dog is dead dude.
back to reading the dribble b/c I have nothing else to do. |

hahaha I don't think he does. It's okay karmat not everyone is a fast thinker if ya know what I mean.
And just for the record Jac I was trying to better the site. No I didn't get what I wanted and I rarely do, but I was upset at people that vote 1's and such on images that clearly don't deserve them, such as ribbon winners. People were voting them down because they were jealous and such and morally it is wrong and it's people like that, that cause the site to be crappy. However, go look at all the ribbon winners on the front page right now... Notice you don't see any 1's. I may have not got exactly what I wanted but I did get my point across.
And no I didn't comment on all the 3's and below. Do I think people should, yes. Will they, no! Do I, no, why not you ask, Why should I be the only one doing it. Someone said along time ago to set an example, well there are people that comment on pictures all the time and everyone has their own way of doing things. Unless the site mandates it certain things will never happen.
And yes I wanted the thread locked because I knew that someone would find this thread and kick it back off. Yes it is beating a dead horse, but isn't that what keeps you going?

Oh my goodness, DD... wow. What a read. Glad I came back to the forums to catch it!
The problem is as follows: DD thinks any 1-3 vote on a picture that HE likes is unfair.
Or, to paraphrase, DD thinks everyone thinks about pictures exactly the same way he does, and would only deviate from that evaluation when trying to influence the outcome of the vote itself. There is no possible way that someone could hate a popular image. To express distaste in the form of a 1-3 vote on an otherwise popular image... well the voter must actually like it, they're just jealous and lying about their real feelings.
Then he throws around some unrelated stuff to make (cloud) his points, like camera quality being an unfair advantage, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary no matter what he's suggested. (All my ribbons were on a Powershot S40, I haven't won a single damn thing since switching to an SLR, natch!) My favorite assertion is that suggestions don't get accepted because of a general resistance to change... not becuse everyone thinks they're bad, when it's pretty clear that 'everyone' thinks certain ideas are simply awful, and the site has, in fact, radically evolved over time. Remember when we had ONE challenge? I do. Remember how contentious a battle THAT was? I do. I kind of wonder if DD's resistant to outside influence himself, and is projecting it onto the SC and site.
(It's pretty amusing that the old version of this site that got linked to on archive.org was one of MY blue ribbons, BTW!)
Top it all off with his own admission that he thinks of a 5 as an 'average' image while actually using 7.5 as the center of his 5-10 voting scale, with 5 being the absolute lowest possible vote from him how that he's all grown up after being here so long... and what you get is a juicy read that's just the thing for an after-lunch break. No wonder he wants the thread locked to keep it from percolating back up to the top where it can be noticed by new eyes. I'd be embarassed too!
In any case, I feel mandatory comments either dumb down the average comment content or eliminate a good chunk of the range of possible votes (e.g. any vote which requires a comment). We would go from a 1-10 scale to a 4-10 scale. DD himself admits that part of the effect would be to (artificially) drive up the scores of otherwise low scoring images. Not because the pictures got any better, mind you... but because people are lazy and won't vote low. Mediocrity is coddled! Everyone gets a bump! We can all feel better about our 'pristine' high scorers!
Aww! I know, let's just give everyone a 10 so we can all feel good and share a blue, and rely entirely on comments to judge an image's actual worth!
What I don't understand is how DD's able to make the metal leap that allows him to discount the fact that for anything in this world there will be reasonable people who hate it, for purely personal whims of taste and temperment.
Aren't public forums grand? :)

Naw, the trolls have just been lazy lately. Many of them work for Santa this time of the year and are too tired to do there normal duties. |

Skipping all but the first posts:
Borders suck, whomever invented borders should be shot. With borders come people who want to control what is inside those borders, with people who want to control come stupid rules, with stupid rules comes suffering. I've been in a few countries, lived among the families in those countries and it turns out that we are all the same and all have the same personal problems. What the fuck do we need borders for.

I blame continental drift for creating the first one. Who knows maybe if we all lived on just one island and never crossed an ocean or a mountain range we wouldn't have had the impulse to create national borders, gated communities, etc.
