Wow.
Storm Rips Through Downtown Atlanta
Just the other day I was commenting how lucky we've been that major cities haven't been hit more often by major tornadoes.

I just read the same thing! You don't hear about downtown tornadoes very often, pretty amazing! |

I'm a little nervous...it seems that in Charlotte, NC, we always get the weather that Atlanta gets. EEEK. |

That appears to have been the same storm that started generating tornadoes east of Shreveport, LA at about 8 pm. I still haven't heard how much damage in this area from that storm. I may try to get out and see what I can find. |

I am an hour away but my kids have a baseball game in about 3 hours so I wouldn't be able to make it up there and back in time. I may go later if I can.

I live just a half-mile from Cabbagetown, the worst-hit area of town. It's just a mess. I walked up there around lunchtime and stopped at the only bar still open.
I've posted a couple of dozen pictures on my Flickr page. Here are two of them:
the Fulton Cotton Mill Lofts (background):
the first wave of today's hail, looking out my front door:
Funny thing is, I was standing outside last night when the tornado hit and didn't hear or notice a thing. I mean, I saw all the lightning and heard the thunder, but didn't see the tornado just up the street. Weird. |

When this storm came through I thought about you Larry. Good to see you made it through. We faired well here as well. No damage to my stuff or the houses around. I may venture out tomorrow and see what all is damaged in Cartersville.

rex - do you mean Douglasville or Cartersville? My sister-in-law lives in Cartersville, we talked to her earlier and she said the warning were sounding but I have not talked to her since. Were there damage in Cartersville? |

Not sure about Floyd but the fatality in Polk County was my neighbor's Aunt.
SDW Yes I am going to Cartersville. I am right next to it. Not sure if there was any damage though.

There was one in Floyd and the one in Polk. I saw aerial shots of the Polk couple's home. That's an unbelievable and terrible story. I hope her husband makes it through okay. |

We had a tornado come through my neighborhood. If you remember 2 weeks ago, it was the "small one" that hit the Kroger store in Douglasville. We had no warning for that one either. It was an unmistakable sound that I won't soon forget. We barley had time to get to the downstairs bathroom. No damage to my house, just lots of rocks from Kroger’s roof. Just a few houses away part of Kroger’s roof landed in a yard and lot of tree’s down. I was talking to a friend in another part of my neighborhood when it touched down and she said she heard nothing. I can’t believe the damage in Atlanta and Northern Georgia. Two things I thought could never happen did in one week.
Looks like tomorrow is going to be another active day in Georgia. I'm saying a pray for all of you in the path of this storm.

Damn! Looks worse than Cabbagetown. My C-town shots don't really give a full picture (ha!) of the destruction because I only stayed on Carroll St. The worst of it was a couple of blocks deeper into the neighborhood. It isn't just the destroyed homes, it's the giant oak trees ripped out of the ground and thrown onto the houses. I just felt weird walking around taking pictures of it all without really being able to help. |
