Cool. If it's cheap and reviews are on par with the Nikkor 50mms, I'll probably ditch my 1.8 in favor of this. |

I'm interested in testing this one if only just for the HSM. IQ should be good as it's almost impossible to make a bad 50mm prime.
bazz.

Interesting - Sigma are entering a crowded market on this one, at least for Canon and Nikon customers. It would take quite a lot to tempt me away from the Canon version! |

true its a crowded market .. unless its price falls between the canon 50mm 1.8 & 1.4 .. sigma will have nothing much to offer... i wonder if they can beat the canon in quality

This is probably a basic question but will this bad boy autofocus with the D40/x? If so they'll sell loads if it's not too expensive, there's no Nikkor 50mm that'll do that. |

I would say yes - as it has a Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM).
As I understand it the D40X doesn't have it's own motor but depends on the lens motor to be able to autofocus. |

Yeah its a big deal for Nikon owners (especially D40, D40x, and D60), Nikons focusing on the 50 1.4 is pretty lame, plus it won't work with the d40 series

It's pretty slow compared to the HSM / USM lenses I've used, plus the full time manual override is pretty nice.

No price info yet, but at least Sigma's 30 1.4 wasn't that cheap... but I don't know, is it easier to manufacture 50mm lens? As a D40 owner this would be nice.

cool. i was just looking on ebay for a used 50 f1.4 or 1.2 AI-S to fill the gap between my sigma 20 1.8 and nikkor 85 1.8, but now i gotta wait to see how this one will stand against the nikkor... |

If it stands against the Nikkor price and performance.... and the word gets out... then Nikon will need to do something quick.
*Nikon marketing*
"Oh crap, we forgot to update our primes!!" |
