As long as the flash is bright enough (in comparison to the light hitting the sensor) it'll probably work. I use mine outside all the time, but it's usually nearing sunset when I do, so I can't really say for sure.

Radio transmitters use radio waves (which don't require line-of-sight), infrared uses infrared light (which does require line-of-sight).

infra red , is like the light from the remote control of your tv. the radio one is more like sound waves.

Radio - the most popular is //www.pocketwizard.com/ . you need one for the camera, one for every light, and cords to connect the PW to the light. And a backup for everything if your working for money.

If your strobes are equipped with IR (infrared) triggers then you'll need something like //www.adorama.com/SVPGIRT20.html to go on the camera. As mentioned, just like a TV remote the lights need to be able to see the camera - a problem if you're using big softboxes, are shooting in full sun, around doors or have a strobe outside the window, up in the rafters (for sporting events for example), the light is behind you (for groups shots like teams and wedding formals), etc.
