k4ffy, not sure I get the Ansel Adams quote reference unless it's to my straight from the camera dream. Interesting question as to what exactly is the negative equivalent in the digital world unless you shoot raw, and even then different cameras and different sensors do vary analogously but not exactly as film varies. Even so, a straight from the camera jpeg is also not so straight. (I quibble that I may understand).

yeh it was in reference to the "straight from camera". it wasn't really that on-point, it just happened to spring to mind, and we'd been talking about advanced editing, sooo

Actually thought about it some more, and I think it IS on point.

Ok, I'll do my best to keep up.... Never specifically tried for a photo a day for any given amount of time. I have a Canon G6, which I may do some with (can I shoot in RAW?), and also a Nikon Coolpix which takes horrible pictures in the school I work in (they all turn out yellow), so maybe I'll challenge myself to take better pictures with that one.

I'll give it a go. It will give me a good excuse to use my P&S cameras that I like so much. I've been trying to ween myself away from them, but I still get better results with the P&S cameras than I do with the SLR.

bump for the morning crowd.

I'd love to try. Hope I can find the discipline to go through with this. I hardly ever touch my P&S cameras any more.

Ohhh, please count me in as well, Canon IXUS 860IS (or Powershot SD870 IS in the US!!)

I have a Lumix TZ3. I'm in.

What about SLRs in programmed auto with lets say the minimal resolusion jpeg, and no higher than 1/1000 shutter nor below a F8 aperture? xD Just wondering :)

It's nearing the end of the hectic harvest season here, and I work with vege packing places, so I may have time to join in this adventure. I just purchased a used (floor model) Fuji A820, for $51, and would like to see how it stacks up against the "big boy" name cams. It only shoots Jpg, max 4 sec, no aperture control except thru iso and EV control in manual, so it has some limitations.
I don't know about your situation togtog. Maybe you could borrow a P&S or get one from somewhere for a couple of weeks. Even shooting minimal settings with a SLR you have the instant shutter response and manual focusing ability that P&S cameras usually do not have. Still, it's ok with me if the rest of the group think it all right.

I wouldn't mind doing this. I've kind of lost interest in the current side challange that I'm in because people keep telling me there's something wrong with my camera. Maybe this side challange can help be the deciding vote on that!?

lol I tried, I could count my G2 but I'm not sure it is up to anything in its old age, kinda just likes to sit around and moan about the better times before full-frame sensors, before everyone was in this gosh darn hurry, back when a couple megapixels was something to boast to the ladies about, but not any more. Now all the ladies want eight megapixel slrs or better that can make a living on their work. I listen to it almost every night, poor thing.

wow this is very weird I've been thinking about doing a P&S side challenge for awhile but haven't had time for it good luck with it and I can't wait to see what you guys and gals come up with!
04/21/2008 12:59:55 AM · #42
togtog, I hope you can use the G2: you and others have done some great work with it.

I'd like to join in - will hopefully be able to keep up.

if you'd honestly consider that a P&S, then according to the "rules" in the first post, go for it. we're on the honor system here.

Oh I'd love to, but I can't even find time to enter a standard challenge. Thanks anyways.

I'd like to join in too and hopefully I can contribute comments and photos daily. :)
Thanks!

Well this sucks. Had a shot all planned out for today and the weather is not what I was hoping for. I have shot this cross and flowers twice now (with my DSLR) and was planning on going back today to shoot it at sunrise. Was not happy with my sunset (light was in the wrong direction) or middle of the day shoots. Figured morning would be the perfect time but it is cloudy and no sun today. Guess I have to come up with something else to shoot today.
