Hi dear all,

My submission for the last week's challenge 'Sun in Frame' was Energy Transition. Thanks for all the people who have voted for this and I really appreciate it.

I'm not here to cry or anything, I'm here to learn and receive any constructive criticism to improve my skill in this fine art. I'm little disappointed being in 71st position for the challenge. I saw 3 votes for 1 (7 for 2, 6 for 3), and I believe 1 on a scale of 10 doesn't qualify for the challenge, was the picture that bad?. I know it doesn't have a 'Wow' factor, but please let me know where I should improve and what went wrong to deserve 71st position. I saw some pictures where there is no SUN in the frame and are in better position than my picture.

Some suggested to have a tight crop, don't know how tight is 'right'. The same picture I rotated a bit (with not image modifications) as in here Energy Transition

Thanks for your time and suggestions.

CS.
(I know the powerlines are not that sharp and the horizon)
(I have a dell 20'' flat screen and it looks good on desktop screen, I have a dell D620 too and it doesn't look good on laptop screen, at the time of saving the picture do I need to check anything in Photoshop to have a uniform look in all screens? sorry if sounded ignorant)

You finished in the top 50% and with a 5.5+ score, which is pretty good for this site at the current time. It's a good shot, but one of the best wow factors about sunsets is clouds, and your image didn't have them. The sky was uniform in colour, and let's not forget that the challenge was full of pictures just like this, so voters get a bit bored after a while.

There's some JPEG artifacting in the top of the sky (blockiness), and the power lines are fairly static. Perhaps a border colour that harmonized with the image (like you did in your "Odd Man Out" image) would have helped too.

It's a nice image, just don't let your results here get to you. If you want to do better in challenges, shoot for what the herd here likes by looking at what worked for previous winners. But at the end of the day, shoot for yourself.

I'd give up trying to get the image to look the same for everyone. How it appears has alot to do with the screen itself, as well as the gamma of the screen, ambient light, viewing angle...really, the list goes on.

The best thing to do is to do a quick greyscale, and check if you're middle grey is at 18% luminoscity (the 'official' value for middle grey). I usually turn my screen all the way down, then up again to see if it looks totally whack at a completly different setting.

Also, top 50% is a good finish. In a judged contest, you're bound to have some lemons.
