Hello all!
I was just wondering if any of you knew anything much about the Air Forces' Still Photography Apprentice MOS. I was looking at possibly joining at some point to go through the program, and work as that. I talked to a recruiter however, and they said it's probably going to be a long wait till that job would be available. I didn't see much about it on the website, and the recruiter didn't enlighten me all that much, so I thought I would just search out anyone that might have looked in to it, or even done it themselves. Is it a fun and rewarding position? Are you mostly just shooting propaganda type pictures, or are you really shooting...the nitty gritty stuff I guess.
It seems like it would be a good step to take if I wanted to do photography/PJ as a profession. I imagine it would look pretty good on a resume and what not, and I would imagine I would go to a lot more places than I would be able to reach as a civilian. Any insight would be more than helpful here, and I thank you in advance for reading this and helping me out!

I don't know too much about this, but what I do know is that one of my best friends thought the same way that you do and got a rude awakening. He decided to sign up for the air force because he figured he could travel around the world, but his recruiter failed to tell him that he may not ever go anywhere, and that's exactly what happened. He signed up in Iowa City and the farthest he got was Texas. They claimed there was something wrong with his credit report and that's why he couldn't leave the US. Whether that was real or an excuse we'll probably never know!
ETA: Good luck in whatever decision you make!!

My husband is in the Air Force and I just asked him if he's ever even met a photog in the AF and that be their job.. He has one time, but she was attached to a combat unit and they were all in Kuwait at the time.. He does remember she said she had been in about 5 or 6 years before she was able to pick that spot up.. Other then that, hubby says all jobs like that are being contracted out to civilians.. Also, I took a photography class at my local JC and we had a guest speaker who was a combat photog back in the days.. Like, during Vietnam and the 70's.. Even then it was a coveted position that only a very few were able to get.
And... My aunt retired from the Navy as a photographer. She had done it her entire career.. 21 years.. She did some amazing things.. But, the reason she was getting out was because #1, they were still using film and things were begining to cost a lot to have her position exist and again, they were contracting these types of positions out to civilians.. |

The air force does have a combat photography squadron, and they are located here in Charleston. I took a field trip with some of the kids I volunteer with out there to meet them.
1st Combat Camera Squadron
Hope this helps. (BTW, these guys had some amazing images to show us! And, they shoot Nikon!) |
