Hum, it seems clear to me that I am going to have to move on from Photoshop 6. I don't even know what some of these functions are.

There sure is some wonderful work showing up here.

Up until a couple of months ago all of my editing was done in PS Elements 2.0. All of the early PS versions are powerful, you just need to take some time to learn how to use them.

I am still using 6, but I love CS3! but dont want to spend the extra money on it now... i use lightroom in addition to PS 6 and it works well

Day 2 ( I had to get a head start... :) )

Before

After

06/01/2008 02:22:35 PM · #56

I have wanted to get this shot for the last couple weeks. In their infinite wisdom the city of St. George, county of Washington, and state of Utah, have decided to place these pre-rusted oversized monolithic tributes to stupidity near some of the most beautiful places on earth. At 40ft high these pillars do little to improve our view of this magnificent landscape.

DAY 1
before after

There were several issues I needed to fix here. The scarf color was overpowering, her arm had too much sag, the focus was supposed to be on the tattoo which you really don't even notice in the original. I cropped, turned to b@w, adjusted levels, burned and dodged some of the areas and added a lighting effect to darken the outer area and keep the highlight on the tattoo. I purposely darkened her eye area to add to the whole middle-eastern-women-behind-the-veil mystery.

I think the lines on the wall actually aren't distracting but keep your eyes moving about the image in a circular motion: face, tattoo, wall, face, tattoo, wall, etc. Of course, I could be wrong but I think it adds as opposed to distracts from the overal image.

Day 1 ... the Lonely Swan.
before
and after.
This is all playing for me ... playing with my new lens, playing with levels.

I don't think there's anything in more recent versions of PS that can't be done in PS6, it's just that some of the new functions make things a bit easier. A lot of the people here are using actions they've downloaded from the web. If you know what the action does, it can be done just as well in PS6.

It's all about time. Yes, you can probably do it in PS6 but you can do it so much faster in later versions. I have CS3 at home and CS2 at work and I often get frustrated when using CS2 because a feature I use all the time in CS3 is missing. I recently did basically the same editing on a photo at home and at work. On CS3 it took 5 minutes, on CS2 it took an hour.

A couple of people have asked about the actiosn I am using. They are sample actions from a larger pack located here - Boutwells magic Glasses. At some point I wouldnt mind purchasing the set, but I just cant afford it right now. The magic glasses and bitchin' b&w action are worth the trip to the site.

Agreed. Don't *even* ask me to give up quick select...

Well, patio127, I couldn't help myself. Here's another edit -
bearing in mind I just used the pixels available, so it doesn't look all that good:

[thumb]684550[/thumb]...[thumb]684552[/thumb]...
I kept going with curves on the white and there's lots more detail that you
can pull out on those petals. then, you could probably select out that orange blurred flower and
also use curves to darken it, i just cloned it out. (Possibly not DPC legal although
I DID crop in pretty close so it might not be considered a 'major object')

I read recently on a post there was a way for CS3 to record your steps in possessing in text. That would be damn handy, does anyone have a link or something to show me how I can do this? Thank You.

If you are using Photoshop you can adjust your preferences to record some or all of your editing steps as a text file -- search PS Help (or the DPC forums) for "Log" ...

You can also take notes with a pencil and the back of the envelope your utility bill comes in ... ;-)

What and stifle my creativity!
:-0

(I did check out "log" in PS3, and came up with some 3d stuff and click counting - but I'll pursue it, 1031.gif GeneralE. If there's a painless way to keep track, I'm all for it)

biteme had the answer:

check "preferences" in Photoshop:

general - history log

there you can set your things and you're good to go :)

"edit the crap out of them" category, for sure. Editing is not my strength nor my pleasure but every now and then...what the hell.

This was taken at a Restaurant at the front bar section for a whole 8 minutes shoot with Nina the bartender right after she set up the bar. We took advantage of a little pre-golden hour light breaking through the window with one reflector pushing some light back to the left side of her face.

I never could have done this edit if I hadn't shot it in RAW. I knew I would need to brighten it up a lot, well before I even started the shoot and hoping for a decent amount of natural light, to give me enough room to play.
