Hey IVO (John), can I ride in your soovee Monday-to-the-Mountains, to feed the bears?

Yes you may if you wish. Inside or on the roof rack? ;-)

So I will be heading to Kilkenny's shortly. How will I find you guys? Are you all planning on sitting at a table photographing each other?

Well I shot my first local Calgary Cowgirl. I later found out Ralph Nevins had taken a shot of me shooting the Canadian girl (and guy). She joked with me and said Ay a lot of times and that she fell off a horse. I joked back and said oh I see your bruises on you belly (was really a tatoo). They were a couple of smokers outside my bldg.

Well...I am off to Wetaskiwin. I guess you guys are about an hour into the workshop. It was nice meeting everyone last night and to those I missed? I'll have to maybe start planning to attend next year. (I heard rumors of Iceland!)

For those of you currently staying in UC dormitory housing, a group of us are meeting in the parking lot in front of Glacier Hall at 10:00am to walk to the train station and go into the GTG downtown. Sean Davis is going to meet us at the downtown train station just after the bridge (around 7th St I think) and guide us to the appointed meeting place by 11:00am. Just thought it might be easier to congregate and go as a group - not necessary, but since so many of us are "lost" here, I thought it might be a good idea. Thank you Davisssrh (Sean) for the offer!

See you tomorrow!

MONDAY JULY 7TH - MOUNTAINOUS ADVENTURE PLANS - LAST CALL

Okay, tomorrow is the day for the proposed excursion.

Quick recap: We will be heading off to the hills of Southern Alberta for a day of fun and frollick. The plan is to do some sightseeing, light hiking, wildlife viewing and high altitude knitting. I'd like to hit the road fairly early, 0700 and therefore need to setup a sensible meeting place to hook up with all those who wish to participate. As mentioned transportation will be via donated vehicles thus sharing the expense of fuel, food etc. I, will have a Ford Escape and have 2 spots remaining. I've prepared a trip map which was emailed to Pedro for distribution. This was sent to on Friday.

It can also be viewed here: DPC Mountain Adventure

Remember we are going to the mountains where blisters prevail and sunburns are common. If we get some unpleasant weather, be prepared with something warm and weather resistant. Good footwear is a must as the rocky slopes can result in some twisted ankles and other unpleasant consequences. If we cross some water, socks will do the trick if you do not have footwear for fording a river. No real need to worry about wildlife attacks as the chance of us encountering ferocious on a hiking trail will be mitigated as I think stealth will not be on our side. A good tripod, filters, batteries, memory cards, BUG SPRAY and need I say your camera, should be mandatory.

This will be a great deal of fun for those who wish to come but I'll need to get some hard confirmations otherwise I will revisit the need to take a day off work. Please let me know as soon as possible so we can get this thing firmed up .... or not. Thanks!.

Just wanted to thank everyone who came out for the workshop... It was a lot of work and I have to say the people who attended made every moment of planning completely worth it!!

Not to mention how wonderful all our models were... each one of them donated their time to us and were gorgeous, well prepared and professional in my opinion!!

Amazing to have met so many new people and the opportunity to reconnect with old friends is absolutely magical!! I feel overwhelmed by the kindness of our group and cant wait for next years event!!

See all those who are taking IVO up on his southern Alberta tour tomorrow at 10am sharp!!!

You're right, Roz, the models were amazing, as were the organizers. I sure wouldn't have wanted to be in your shoes! (well, maybe for one of the steamrollers, but sure not for all the work you and the rest did.)
Also a big thanks to those who helped out throughout the weekend; providing transportation, lending a hand for setup and teardown, and all the other little tasks they cheerfully volunteered for (and maybe regretted after? ;) )

I had a wonderful time and learned loads, not only in the workshops but around the table over dinner or a beer. Thanks to EVERYone there for making it such a great weekend! :D

Hi to all my newly found friends. I am back home after an uneventful flight. I trust everyone made their tight connection.

I wanted to reiterate how much I enjoyed this workshop and GTG and how much I admire Roz and Peter and team for the enormous effort they invested in pulling this all together. Thank you!

Enjoy the rest of your time in Calgary if you are still there, and have a safe continuation of your journeys. I look forward to meeting all of you again in, at least, cyber space.

It's too bad that i just found this thread right now. Especially seeing as I'm from Calgary and would have loved to have listened to what all the experienced speakers had to teach about photography. Maybe it's time to start paying more attention to the GTGs here on dpc.

I'm home after a long but pretty drive. Want to add my thanks to Roz & Peter as well as all their helpers and a big thanks to the models for the hours of hot rooms and the pain of inexperienced photogrphers. It was nice to meet some of the people I only knew though cyberspace and find out they were real!

I should be able to upload some shots in the morning as I have been going through them a little on the way home. Can't say as they will be fully processed but I know people want to see PHOTOS!

Here is a quick process of some of the DPC'ers who attended (names are on filename):

I know, everyone wants the models! Coming soon.

Ok - here are some of the models as promised. Quick edit and crop only and I kept a few out that I may want to enter in future or current challenges.

edit:

Thought I would add a few comments about the workshop. I attended knowing that I knew next to nothing about studio lighting or fashion or nude photography. You can likely tell that from my photos below!

The nude photo session was supposed to be about painting with light and keeping it low key. I had some success but botched most of my turn with the lights. Many of the shots you see here were shot without the benefit of the lights and used only modeling light for the source while others had their turn.

Playing with different light setups for the fashion model sessions was an experience and taught me how hard it is to keep it soft. You can see I had relatively mild success but that is mostly due to the models who were very helpful and knew what they were doing even if I did not.

In the end I did learn quite a bit in the short time we had and look forward to applying some of the knowledge in the future. It would be interesting to do the workshop over again and see if I could improve. Maybe next year.

We got home at 11 last night after leaving there at 8am and driving straight through. The internet connection on my computer isn't working, apparently, so hopefully tomorrow after the cable's working in our new place I can get some shots up. Moved two loads to the new place today so haven't even dumped the pics onto my computer yet.

I miss all you guys!!

JB, I especially love the water spray shot. I'm glad she got her revenge for him making her constantly jump with the cold water!

What a GREAT GREAT time!!! I just got back to my brother's place in NC around midnight last night and head back out to CA tomorrow to shoot a wedding. So, it'll be a few more days before I post any of my shots, but I will as soon as I can.

Thank you all again for organizing it and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you all! :-)

Whew! I finally made it back!
In Toronto the pilot made a "Go around" since he didn't like the approach. Maybe it was his first landing (Airbus-plane), so I gave him a second chance :-) It was my 1st time, so I was surprised/scary when very close to landing, he "gunned it"/"pedal-to-the-metal" and went back up.

I like roller coasters, it was a smooth ride. Heavy rains cancelled all flights to CLE.

Luckily, after an hour and a half I found our good friend in Missisauga (about 20-minutes away) at home. "Cindy-n-Kays" Bed-n-Breakfast(condo-suite) had towels soap in a marble bath, free guest room, and food waiting!

I can't thank you enough. All of the wonderful new found friends in Calgary. Thanks all, Roz, Pedro, Dave-K, and especially John Kirinic, who helped me Sherpa-style climbing the North-Face.

I got back and met my wife at the "Longhorn" restaurant. I walked in, wearing a new K-Mart Cowboy hat and sunglasses and she didn't recognize me.

I am really, I mean all the Pros, Gary, Joey, Pedro, etc./etc. "they will pump you up". My brain and muscles ache from all the knowledge bestowed upon me!!!
I will miss everyone.

My first model shoot. I wasn't sure if I could show their face here since I didn't get a release from them. So I blocked out the face with stars. (just-kidding) And No I wasn't trying to get her phone number. she was showing me her website.

The workshop was an absolute blast, made some awesome new friends and learned quite a bit and the models were great as well. Roz, Peter I cant thank you guys enough for the workshop it went far beyond my expectations. Ivo (John) you were awesome as well, even though Ive lived here all my life the places you took us, Ive never been myself so it was a great experience for me seeing those places as well as seeing everyone else's reactions to the countryside :)

It was great meeting all those who came for a "Walkabout" in the mountains. You are a fine bunch of people! There were times when I looked at everyone clicking and chimping in unison and could not help to chuckle at what a bunch of techno geeks we really are. It was a blast and certainly worth repeating in the future. Be in touch!

In the meantime, see you in the forums!

Hi Group... :)

Just dropping in to your forum to give everyone a HUGE THANK YOU for a fantastic few days for me as well; it was a great experience from my side of the lens also!

It certainly didn't take long for me to notice what a strong, positive community that you have established -- hope that dynamic follows you back home and carries into your craft at home.

Great working with you all on the weekend and perhaps again sometime soon -- was really a pleasure!

J.
