Or, maybe "Barack Obama KO's Hillary Clinton"? Short title didn't work this time. That, or maybe the photo just stunk. :-P

He was leaning over, looking down at Hillary. :-) |

I didn't get it either. ;-)
Possibly a "ground up" shot with the perspective being that of the defeated queen looking up at the triumphant king?
Too conceptually deep for the DPC crowd. |

Considered it. Didn't have a small enough camera. :-P |

Bah, 9/10ths is not the whole. Cut a hole in the chess board for the lens! ;)

No.
I understood his concept.
But I think of the Obama/Clinton slugfest being more like the end scene in Rocky I...with a person being declared the winner 'by points' and not by a knockout.
Obama...won alot in the beggining..and then just clung to his lead. He didn't really knock her out.

Maybe it's just me, but I find this thread (and the entry) incredibly ironic given your post last week-
Originally posted by glad2badad: It sure seems like the photos in this challenge are extremely title dependent this time around. ???
IMO, only a small percentage of the photos can stand on their own, portray a message of success, and take into consideration this part of the challenge description: "Create a photograph that communicates success."
It doesn't say, "Create a clever title and put a photo with it.". :-/ |

Me too. :-D I should have gone with a longer, more descriptive, title I think. The image did stand on it's own, albeit weekly or with wide interpretation, without a title IMO. |

??? I don't understand your post.
ETA - I'm pretty sure that I created a clever photo (IMO) and put a (unfortunately too undescriptive) title with it. Guess I'm missing something in Scalvert's irony?

Your entry does not visually communicate success. There is no checkmate shown, and the opposing king is being tipped over (a symbol of defeat in chess). Without the clever title, you didn't really meet the challenge... exactly what you complained about in the forum post, no? The photo itself just appears to be a jumble of chess pieces (perhaps a depiction of poor sportsmanship as the board is being tossed), and you're here wondering if your title should have been clearer? Considering your prior post, something does not compute. :-/

Hmmm...I didn't think a one word title was "clever". I forgot about the tipping King connection in chess, so I can see your point about that. All a matter of perspective I guess. Perhaps in my post that you've resurfaced, I should have complained about "lengthy, descriptive, titles". :-) |

I didn't vote on it, but I did get the title. Not a bad shot, though not an outstanding one that pops at me either. I might have tweaked the WB a little cooler and done some adjustments to accentuate the detail and texture of the wooden pieces. |

Oh, sure it was... connecting the politics to a chess game was a clever concept. However, without that title, I see no connection whatsoever to success. Another thing to bear in mind is that DPC members from other countries may not even understand the reference. |

To you.
And this is where I (like you) have a problem with people who complain about "shoehorned" entries, many of which *obviously* meet the challenge to others.
Except for the occasional mistaken entry into the wrong challenge, I'm pretty sure that every submission meets the challenge, either head-on or obliquely, depending on the photographer's style. I tend to vote on how strongly the photo "says" [challenge_topic] to me, but it's an extremely rare occurrence that I find no connection at all to the topic. |

Maybe you could have hung a little sign saying "Retired" on the White King to clarify the relationships ... :-) |

Hey! Scalvert said I was "clever"...well maybe not me, just the title. :-} He-he. I did think about the non-U.S. members/voters not catching it. |

Ok. Now I'm wanting a "do-over". :-D I could cut a hole in the chessboard, put a sign on the white king, and some other stuff I've probably missed. :-P |

Do tell... what about those chess pieces visually demonstrates success? The configuration does not show a win for either side, there's no celebrating player visible, and the tipping king with another "dead" chess piece on the board wouldn't even be a depiction of a normal game in progress. I didn't vote or complain about shoehorned entries in this one, but I sure don't see a connection apart from the title. Enlighten me.

I'm not disagreeing with your opinion, but rather with your stating it as obvious fact. It is that aspect of many people's comments I find most irksome; not their opinion, but the statement of that opinion as axiomatic reality ... say "Your entry does not visually communicate success to me" and I wouldn't have mentioned it at all. |
