I seem to like soft focus in some photographs, but I am not quite sure most everyone else does. I posted for the Seven Deadly Sins III challenge a picture of my cat, sleeping. Its title was Don't you envy my lazy rest?. In this photograph, I thought soft focus looked good for two reasons: first, his fur looked softer, more fluffy, as opposed to sharp focus, where his fur looked harder, like needles or wires; and second, as someone noticed, it gave the photograph a dreamy sense, which related to the title. I also chose this soft focus on my Brown Ribbon Dream picture, again, to make it look dreamy, but I see some people didn't like the effect either.

Anyway, I would like some ideas or comments as to what I'm doing wrong, and why. Thank you very much in advance!

I'm a huge fan of soft focus !!! It's just a personal opinion and I tend to use it often.. Of course, not everyone agree's hence the score on this image & the comments .. I think you made a good choice with soft focus for this image.

There is a subtle line between soft focus and out of focus. Many times we step over the line from the good side to the bad side. Soft focus is not achieved through slightly unfocusing the lens.

This image is 'soft focused' using a diffusion filter.

It can also be done in post processing using gaussian blur but you have to take care not to over do it. Soft focus (like selective desat, particularly in the above image where it doesn't enhance the image) should be sparingly used for a particular effect. I'm not sure it was needed on your ribbon image but, with better lighting on your cat image, could have really worked well.
