As fir3bird asked, have you installed the software that came with the camera?
07/28/2008 07:45:34 AM · #27
yes all installed, however I have been informed that the usb setting on the camera may be in the wrong mode, will attempt to change it on my return home, hopefully this will recitfy it...

Buy a card reader. They cost about 20 bucks. Maybe different on different cameras, but it is much faster for me to take the card out of the camera and upload the photos there than the slow upload from the camera. Whatever you do, I hope you get it running soon. I know how frustrating it is to buy such a wonderful new toy, and then have it not working properly.

I was impulsive today. Last month I bought a D300. Then in July I heard the announcement of the D700. I contemplated all month, what I shoot, ect. I like the DX factor with my zooms, but then realized I only really use it at the zoo. I really like to shoot landscapes and want to get into people photography, specially when I go to Peru this week. So I figured what the heck, if they'll let me exchange (it had been over 30 days), I'll do it. So I'm sitting here with a new D700 as well! Have to see if it connects fine with my comp.

The Lexar Professional UDMA is what I use and they work extremely well and are fast too.

We've been trying to discuss this issue over in the Nikon forums at DPReview, but haven't gotten very far either (//forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1021&message=28795786).

The most I can figure out is that the USB option for 'Mass Storage' is no longer available starting with the D700. The D300 and D3 have it, just not the D700.

This forces you to either remove the Compact Flash card, or transfer using P2P mode, which is painfully slow. I can dowload about 100 images in ten minutes in P2P.

Having bent a pin on my D200 when switching CF cards, I've become very leary of removing them from the camera and usually opt to download via USB cable instead.

Hi
I ended up restoring my computer to a previous saved date, I realized that it could be my computer when the card reader wouldn't recognize either, I'm not sure whether installing the software did something to my computer, but once I had restored my laptop and placed the software back on it,it worked, however on the lcd panel you still don't get the PC and moving line which indicated on other nikons it talking to the computer.
But many thanks to all who gave advice

Hi all,

Just purchased a D700, and on connection to my mac it isn't recognised as a new drive as per my other camera it also will not be picked up by the Camera Control Pro 2 software i have. I've installed the software that came with the camera and the D700 is viewable so there must be communication there. I also know that on my older Nikon i could change the USB settings to PTP to allow connection with Control Pro. The D700 doesn't have this.

Also this is the first Nikon i've owned with a LCD display panel but my understanding is that when connected to a PC it should state 'PC' on this panel. Is this correct? Mine simply flickers as if its trying to say PC but can't quite make it. Surely this can't be right?

I have two Mac computers which are fairly new and have tried it on both and the same problems occur.

I'd be extremely grateful if someone could give me the heads up as to a solution as i've been waiting ages for this camera and it not working how i hoped has kinda taken the edge off of owning it. Bloody brilliant picture quality though ;-)

Oh and before i forget if anyone is thinking of buying one in the UK i'd do so fairly sharpish as i went into my preferred shop yesterday to spec one out and they had raised the price from £1500 to nearly £1800. Apparently it is due to the weak pound at the moment. Luckily i went to another shop and got them before they put their prices up which they said they were doing this weekend. I've also since read that the prices may even rise again soon.

Thanks

Steve

Hi

I had the same problem, although I dont think it's a problem,my d700 still does not show PC and get recognised with iphoto or aperture 2, I think it's just one of those things

I'm guessing if the peeps at Nikon have half a skull they will return the Mass Storage option with the next/first Firmware Update. Really silly thing to leave out.

I still can't see Raw thumbnail images in Leopard/Finder which bugs the piss out of me but I'm used to viewing and organizing through Lightroom which is a smarter way to go.

Hi anyone know how we can shoot the d700 live/tethered to a mac without having to purchase the new Nikon camera control pro 2. I have the old version of Nikon cameral control that worked great with my D200, but it does not work for the D700. I cannot justify the cost of the latest version of NCC2 for the amount I would use it. However, the instant feedback on a big screen is very useful, especially with my eyesight. Any suggestions

Tethered
You can use Automator to run these type of things.

Hi all,

Loving the D700 having owned it for a little while now. Just having a little bit of trouble with the 'bulb' function. On my D40 i could press the shutter release button once which effectively opened the shutter and then press it again when i want the shutter to close. From what i can gather on the D700 i have to physically hold down the shutter release for the duration of my desired exposure. Does anyone know of a way i can push it once to open and again to close? I also have a remote shutter release which i was also able to use on the D40 but again i don't seem to be able to use it with the D700. It could very well be a compatibility issue although the D700 has all the bells and whistles and so i was a little surprised it can't do this.

I'd appreciate any help with this.

Cheers

Not sure why that is but I think it holds true to several nikon models. I recall having to hold the button down on my d-200 until I purchased a remote shutter release

Thanks all for your input. Might have to buy another remote shutter release with the lock function.

Also just came across the attached link of some light trail pictures and thought you all might appreciate checking it out. //kaalam.free.fr/nouvellesgaleries/Light/index.html
