WoW, What fun.
I am a diehard Avalanche fan, but I have never had a good camera while at the games. This is my first game with my Canon 300D and my Sigma 70-300mm lens. It was such a blast to be able to get in close and personal photos just like the pro's. Not that I'm anywhere close to a pro. But check out some of my photos from last night. I think they turned out pretty good.

Those are some really great action shots. Too bad you didn't have one of those for the Magazine Cover challenge. You have GOTTA be pleased with that camera/lens combo.

You're lucky that they allow "long lenses" in your arena; Joe Louis (where the Red Wings play) have a strict rule on cameras. From their web site:

Camera Policy:
Cameras under 54 mm are allowed inside Joe Louis Arena on game day. Cameras with lenses that extend over 54mm and detachable lenses over 54mm will not be allowed inside Joe Louis Arena on game day. Video cameras and flash photography are not allowed.

54mm is a little over 2 inches, which means any sort of decent zoom lens (like my beloved 70-200/2.8L IS with a 1.4X TC) is out of the question...

Eddy,

I was really afraid that I wouldn't even be allowed inside with my camera. There were signs up all over the place at the OnCenter that said no cameras allowed. I just kept my mouth shut and made it past all the ushers. I think, though, that this place is really lax on all the rules. There were a lot of people with backpacks and such getting in with no questions. I saw a few fans with small point_n_shoot cameras, but not many fans with a SLR type camera. I think I just got really lucky too. None of the ushers that went by, and I was right on the front row of my section, had a problem with me and my camera. Whew!
You wouldn't even be allowed inside the Pepsi Center in Denver with a backpack or large bag of any kind.

Thanks Ron,
I do like the combo! For the price of that lens, it does a decent job, but is a bit off at the far end(300mm). Last night, I tried to keep it around 135mm to 250mm just to keep away the aberations and fuzziness.

Cheers....Martin

Those are great photos!

Glad to see there is someone else here that enjoys hockey!

Here is a few of the shots I've taken throughout the season for our hockey club! I only wish I had the equipment you did to take pics at the game. But I settle with what I have.

Here are my hockey photos:

Luckily the Dallas Stars do not have such a rule :)

We walked into the American Airlines Arena with my entire camera bag full of gear :) It was in the private suite that belongs to the company my wife works for so a long lens is the only way to reach them.

These are really great. Are you sure you don't work for the AP, those photos sure look pro to me! Great job!

those are incredible...

I wonder if they'd let my little ole fuji 602 in there :). If I had one, additional tele-lens are less than 54mm in length...

hmmmm

Oh, thanks guys!

I really like your pics too, Dan. Looks like you are doing just fine with the camera you have. Great photos!

I posted a note on the local Crunch Forum on the online city guide to share my photos with some of the locals. Well, I just got an email from the mother of the little girl, in the photo on my site. She wanted to know if I would send her a copy of the photo and said that the little girl hasn't missed a crunch game in 3 years. Incredible! So I sent her a copy. (:

Those are awesome action shots! Arena lighting is generally not very easy to get good exposures, I think...and you did very well with these. I think they look professional. And you didn't just get lucky with one or two shots....they are all very nice!

Thanks Judy, The nice thing about the Rebel is that you can adjust to the harsh lighting or the high kelvin range of lights found in arena's.

Just wanted to share another email I recieved from a local guy here in Syracuse.

[quote]Martin

I saw the pics you took of the Cleveland game...excellent work! If you ever want a place to display your Crunch pics, happy to do so on my website, //www.syracuse-crunch.com They will be seen by a lot of fans, as my site gets easily more traffic than any other Crunch site on the web. It is also frequented by the players and their families. I have four photographers that currently contribute, but always looking for more, particularly of your quality. Unfortunatly, I can not pay you for your pics, but you are welcome to try to sell them off the site as well.
Just throwing this out there, if not interested, no biggie. Again, great stuff!

I'd like to let this guy put up some of my photos on his site. I'm not interested in getting paid, but I am kinda leery about giving them to this guy to do whatever he wants with them. Any advice on how to handle this? Questions to ask? Best way to get the credit for taking the photos? Things to watch out for? Any advice would be appreciated!

Get a contract with the person/site outlining a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free copyright license; you can probably model it on the language used by DPC or other photography sites. Just list off the things they're allowed to do (e.g. post and archive the photos). Since you are not restricted by DPC rules, you can probably put an actual copyright notice in a corner of the photo or border.

Post the prints in a DPC Prints gallery and have the webmaster put links to them as part of the photo credit.

Unless the photos have some real commercial/news value, don't worry about it and be glad a lot of people are passing them around and enjoying them; they may remember your name when they are in the market to but a fine photographic print.

Thanks Paul,

You know, I didn't even think about DPC Prints. I haven't even put a single photo up there yet. That's a great idea. Thanks for the advice.
You're right about that, I am glad just to have some of my photos out there that people want. The fans here are really into their team!

I think putting them on DCPrints and them allowing the guy to direct traffice to your prints via his website sounds like a great idea for these pics. I would think that the fans might be willing to part with a few bucks for your work.

Don't forget to give them your own URL (olympian.dpcprints.com) so you get the referral commission too. Of course, you're welcome to send them through mine if you'd rather ....

Those are some great sports photos Martin! You don̢۪t need to be a pro to take professional looking photos.

You should probably put a copyright notice in the photos if you̢۪re going to post them on a web site. And, you might want to check with the teams and/or the arena before trying to sell them. They may have exclusive rights to any photos taken at the event.
