The push/pull kind to be exact... Has anyone ever used them? How are they? Not so much in an optical sense, I know that's gonna be really good. I mean, does the lens creep at all, is the AF speed OK, is the push/pull a hassle, etc.

I don't have specific experience with the Nikon 80-200 2.8. But do have a fair amount of experience with push/pull lenses. There are really two big flaws with push/pull. 1) The more they are used the looser they become. Over time, no matter how tight they start, they will loosen up and creep is inevitable. 2) Dust magnets. Whenever you push the lens out it is sucking in air, and therefore dust and whatever else is floating around.

I have never used the push pull lens but have had the opportunity to handle one. The one I played with had almost no lens creep but this was in very good condition. If you can take a look at and play with the lens you will get a good feel for its wear. Opticaly the lens will be top notch.

I have the next model up. Not the push pull, but the 2 ring version. Creep is ever so slight.

The lens is super sharp with great DOF. Its a bit noisey, but my version is an AF-D, not an AF-S. So, I cant complain. Its one of the sharper lenses I own.

Its super heavy. It weighs more than the prime 200.

77mm filter size. Which is the largest i own. Nikon does all those funny things and my filters range from 55 to 70. Step down rings help.

Have a look here at photozone.de for the most techincal and best review. I read somewhere that this version was somehow better (sharper?) than the push pull, but i dont recall where. It might have been that the lens was completely redesigned when they made the 2 ring version. I paid about 700.00 on Ebay for mine.

The lens comes highly reccomended! =)

Here are some images from Pbase with the lens.

Hope this helps.

A push/pull 80-200 passed through my hands once as part of some craigslist wheeling and dealing. Comparing it to my current model, it was basically the same, except it focused a bit slower. Excellent optics, same size and weight as the current 80-200 (a bit shorter and lighter than the 70-200).

I had the first version of that lens several years ago. Great optics, slow autofocus. No zoom creep that I remember, but that might be an issue with an older lens.

OK, thanks for the responses, guys. Think it'd be worth getting, or should I go after an AF-S version?
