Coolio. I'd love it if my 40D had a movie function, it would be a lot of fun to control the dof and have big zoom.
Of course, my little point & shoot is easy clamp low on my bike for neat angles, which I wouldn't risk with my slr.
Check out this video I made recently. I used a superclamp and mounted my Canon Powershot A95 point & shoot to my daughter's bike handlebars, then to a couple of different places on my bike. :-)

| I've never been into shooting video, but that is a very nice feature and the quality is excellent. |

| If this is going to be some new trend, I hope that they offer video and non-video capable versions of the same cameras. Paying for a feature I wouldn't use sucks. Adding additional complication to an already complex piece of electronics and increasing the number of things which can fail sucks as well. |

seems like a gimmick to me
most video hobbyists would just buy a higher end HD camcorder, no?

The thing is, I was very much the same with Live View - I thought it was kind of a step backwards and I would never use it, hell I cant even Auto-focus with it, but then I tried it and found it was actually very well implemented and actually very useful. I tend to use it when out shooting nature, I can just use the 10x zoom (which does not pixellate) and watch the wildlife closer than any of my lens allow through the view-finder. Also, maybe people will find they enjoy shooting movies as much as still photography, especially when they can use all their lenses... I will reserve judgement on Movie mode in DSLR, but I will not dismiss it without trying it like I did with live-view. |

When I'm out with my family, sometimes I like to take pictures and sometimes I like to take video.
I don't have a camcorder, but I do have a Nikon Coolpix 8800 that takes video. Sometime I will carry both my Nikon D80 and my 8800 if I want to do both still and video.
But a dSLR that does 720p video as well? Sold! |

| i think it's awesome! i was always interested in film as well as still images so that might be a great opportunity! oh and heck, shooting movies with my fisheye could be insane...;D |

It doesn't autofocus in video mode? If that is accurate, it makes it almost useless. Am I not reading that correctly? |

| Sure it is. Now show me how well you can continually focus on a moving object, holding the camera steady, etc. Shooting video is way different than shooting stills, and if it REALLY can't autofocus it may as well be a webcam. |

But thats what DoF is for...and could make for some very cool effects. I would now just like to see a Nikon Video camera that I could use all my lenses on. Then Im sold! |

I will. For the same reason I dismiss cameras and mp3 players in phones. There are dedicated devices for both which do a superior job. It's functionality I don't want, end up paying extra for when all I need is a phone and is something else that can go wrong. LiveView is an enhancement of the primary technology, not a secondary technology bolted on to be used as an additional line item in a marketing brochure. |

That was my first thought, too... I notice the sample videos did a lot of artsy focal panning. Which is a cool effect, but I believe that autofocus would be the preferred mode of operation.
I wonder if aperture is locked as well... |
