I created a b&w layer on top of my original and when i try to use the b/g eraser it gives me the error: "could not use the b/g eraser because the target channels do not cover the composite"

what the heck does this mean and how do i fix it?

Try masking it instead....much more control.

Using a layer mask is a much better way of doing it. Good luck.
