She was torn to shreds for leaving "Great job!" comments and was made to go back and change them otherwise she would have been in strife for artificially inflating her stats (or something like that).

So, what's good for the goose.......

Exactly! You've restated that situation quite accurately. She seemed to be a decent person and that incident really turned her off to DPC.

How much does the Title play a role in the score?
Does a really imaginitive title get a bump?
An offensive one get a detraction?

Comments are also unmarked as helpful when the commenter modifies the comment. Like, say, for a spelling error ;-) I actually do review my comments sometimes and correct the typos during the challenge. Doesn't mean I changed my vote.

Actually, that's not quite true. She was not "made" to go back and change them, but in some cases she did. She was asked to stop cutting/pasting the same comment all the time.

Ah, thanks for clarifying L2 :) I think I may have been confusing the outcome of that with what happened to the free study "DNMC" comments not too long ago.

I think it really doesn't matter WHAT system a person uses to vote on the images in a challenge... AS LONG AS each person who votes on ANY image, votes on EVERY image in the challenge, using the same scale, it will all work out in the end. Of course, one can't vote on his own, so that one is excused. *grin*

What I don't think is fair is voting for just some of the images... as this will skew the scores for those images.

That said, I try to give at least a 5.0 vote average on each challenge.

I'm "curious" also in what makes a "smiley" continously posted any different from "Great Job". A former SC member stated during the "Great Job" era the following:

Originally posted by HBunch:

...if you (or anyone else) feels the need to continue making such cut and paste comments, they will be removed as well, and possible penalties applied.

Quote taken from early on in the just curious thread.

As for the intention of the DPC'r that rinac mentions in her post, there was good intention (at least that's what I got out of it in several PM's that went back and forth between myself and the "Great Job Fairy") and many of the comments were changed. Many of the "Great Job" comments that did not get modified by the author were deleted by SC/DPChallenge.

So, I guess given prior precendent we should see the current smileys go away pretty soon also?

Read what? My post? Glad's post? L2's? Yours?

I personally don't mind getting smilies as comments, but not when they're accompanied by obvious lowball votes, and definitely not when they're copy/pasted out of pure laziness.

So far, your comments haven't been removed, and you've made no effort to change anything yourself. Why not put your money where your mouth is...

If you honestly cannot find a single image worth more than a vote of 3, don't smile about it, tell us all why you think so - back up your low votes with that strong critique of yours.

Rarely do I mark a comment as unhelpful, and then usually because my fur is ruffled, which is the case in the smiley glyphs, now that I know their origin/significance. It is not a big deal. Not for me. Possibly for him: profile statistics may show an inordinate number of not helpful comments unless he chooses to change or remove them.

swankFoto, a lot of us try to ignore the title in judging a photo, but sometimes it is hard when it is an attempt to shoehorn something into meeting the challenge, or when it is just too, well, too too... On the other hand the heart leaps at an especially felicitous title, and that counts, I believe, in whatever proportion of the score goes to sheer enjoyment of a photo.

Personally I think Timfys titles are not too bad normally ;)

Sorry I'll get my coat!
