Just as a heads up - we've reviewed the "-x" comments and can see that the "-" sign is a dash rather than a negative sign. |

Could be worse....could give you a low score AND a nasty comment which would have you pounding your keyboard or mouse through your desk! ;)
Come on guys....I have gotten far more upset at some of the really screwball comments that I've gotten on some of my best shots. This just makes me shrug my shoulders. We're going to get the 1's, 2's and 3's no matter what we do. Having a happy face typo along with that score is not going to make it any worse nor, is not having it, going to make it any better.
If you all like, I'll go give you all 10's and put :( as my comment! ;) |

SORRY folks. IT WAS ME.
I did comment some photos and ended it with - xx. I have changed that to === xx.
They were to be an indicator of the casted votes NOT a reference to negative scores. |

Hi Laura - If the smiley you got was from me, it wasn't a low vote. It would have been anywhere from a 5 to 8.
It seems that the SC thought I had some other agenda going on. I thought some smiley emoticons that varied based on a like/dislike scale would be kind of fun. IMO not much different from getting a "great", "nice", "good", "lousy", or "smells" one word comment (maybe I'll try that next time) :-D ... or just posting a number in the comment area.
Anyway...for those who'd like to know, there is a score attached to your smiley and it ranged like this:
:-D is outstanding, equating to a 9 or 10 score.
:-) is something I liked, scoring from 5 to 8.
:-} has potential, liked it, but not quite there, scoring from 4 to 6.
:-| ok, but not really something I liked or it didn't fit the challenge IMO, score from 3 to 6.
:-? didn't understand the photo or it's connection to the challenge, score from 3 to 6.
:-/ didn't really like it for the challenge, or was very title dependent, score from 2 to 5.
:-[ didn't like it at all for either image quality or challenge fit, score 1-3.
There's probably one or two variations I missed. If yes, PM me (after the challenge) and I'll check it out.
FWIW, here are my stats for my voting breakdown:
You have rated 114 of 114 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 114 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 5.0088.
By score - 10 (2), 9 (3), 8 (5), 7 (10), 6 (15), 5 (36), 4 (24), 3 (12), 2 (5), 1 (2)
Like it, don't like...eh. I'm not trying to hide anything, although that was the first time I've ever used the "baggie" while voting. Think I'll turn that off now. :-)
edit - just realized I forgot the scoring range for two of the "smilies".

Actually, in reading this explanation, I thought this was pretty ingenius and creative! I didn't think there were so many faces that could be made from these little suckers. *smile*
But, I got a bone to pick here......
To think that I defended your system on this thread, not knowing what it really meant, but taking it as fun anyways to find out that I am the recipient of :-\ and seeing the legend that goes with it....all that I can say is.....

Ahh very clever system, glad2badad! In that case, thanks for your vote :) Someone else must have hit me with a low vote at the same time. Oh well, can't please everyone!

Please don't do smilies. The vast majority of people will not read this thread and have no idea what the heck is going on. It says nothing constructive (either critical or praise) about the image and does nothing but artificially inflate your comments given stats. If you want to use the smilies in combination with a constructive comment that is a totally different story.

Comments need to be constructive? Since when? There are tons of "nice", "great", "good job" comments out there over the years. Yes, constructive is nice, but not mandatory.
It's been discussed numerous times in these forums that if you really want a constructive comment/critique on an image, then post the image to a thread and ask for feedback after the challenge, or select the "I would like an indepth critique on my submission" checkbox when you submit a challenge entry. |

Let me put it to you another way. What is the purpose to leaving little smilies as comments? Do you think that somehow everyone will be able to read your mind and not only know what the smilie means in relation to scoring, but also why you did or did not like an image or thought it did or did not meet a challenge? If there is no purpose except to satisfy some repressed feelings you have about smilies, then please leave them as comments on your images, not others.
Thank you.
oh yes, :)
