I thought my pic was pretty abstract but I've had 2 comments saying otherwise. I still like the shot, even though it's continuing to do pretty badly.

Some comments just make you laugh. Somebody didnt like the fact that an abstract image is slightly soft focussed. Wickedly funny;-)
Yet, I accept the fact that not everyone has the same definition of an astract photograph. Appreciate all the comments. Thanks. |

Voting was really hard this time, left a few comments. I don't plan on commenting the majority but I'll make another pass at it later. My score still sucks.

After going through this challenge, I'm actually kind of in shock with how badly my shot is doing.
I wash my hands of abstract challenges from now on, I really, really do. |

I have seen the future, and know the winners. However there is only a few that are worthy of the front page in my opinion. It seems like there is lots of confusion on this one. |

Still dropping. Does the stock market have anything to do with the scores??? It has lost .27 since the market closed.

But if you happen to have any money to invest, now is the time. Some real bargains to be had. These are the markets that make millionaires billionaires.
Actually I don't think there were that many good images. I only had a few pegged as really good. Don't get me wrong there were some decent photographs in the challenge, but only a few had that blend of good photo/challenge excellence about them.

My photo is evoking the emotion I expected (that is good) but the scores are not showing it (that is bad). It did get up to a 5.38 before I went to bed. Fell through the night. It would be nice If people could tell me what is not absract about mine because I really think it is. |

I used the force to reach out to the future. Only one photo deserves its place as the number one. |

So, do you think that just "Wow" means, "Wow, you really understood the challenge, well done!" or rather, "Wow, you honestly have no idea what you're doing!"
Judging by my score, I think the latter.

Just to throw something out there:
I just got my newest copy of Photo Life magazine last night and interestingly enough there was an article called "Abstracting and abstracts" by Freeman Patterson.
His opinion is that all good photography uses abstraction. Abstraction uses the basic building blocks of visual design (e.g. Line and shape). He indicates that most shots contain 2-4 basic shapes (at most 6). I wish I had pictures to demo this. He shows a field of flowers and indicates that there are two basic shapes (rectangles) in the shot.
He also indicates that we tend to think of certain photos, painting or drawings as "abstract" because they have no definable labels and they don't represent anything in any obvious way. In his opinion, a more accurate term would be "non-representational".
Now that aside I think our challenge is looking "non-representational" images. Of course that's a separate debate...
//bermangraphics.com/press/patterson.htm has a interview with Freeman Patterson where he discusses this. (if you want to "cut to the chase" do a find on the page for non-representational)

Thanks Citadel. Freeman Patterson's work itself is exemplary of these principles of abstraction: the charm or magic in them is this freedom from "thingness." (I need reminding: a thing needs to be more than a thing). |
