The comments and the number of lower votes make me wonder if these two shots were voted down because there WERE two and it was presumed (by at least some) that they were shooting together.
Well, this was one of those weird coincidences of life! Neither even knew the other was there.

As has been argued this week about the wildlife challenge, it isn't safe to presume you know what's behind the shot. Give the entry the benefit of the doubt, okay? :)

I don't get why one or the other has to suffer just because they're both in the same challenge? wtf?
That's just sad. |

Well I gave them both a 7 and never even realized how similar they were until now! I just vote on each individual image when I go thru a challenge. |

I did comment believing two people to have taken the same shot because that's what it looked like but I'd like to add that it didn't affect my vote, I still liked the shots. My mistake but the vote didn't suffer.

Oddly we both shot on a different day with the same lens and still got such a similar shot possibly at a different location too. Talk about precision with the flying.

Now I wonder how many more got similar shots that they didn't enter?
Just sucks that you two had to suffer. Yeah, I know it wouldn't make a huge difference scorewise, but still...!
I had a look at how many 1's the shots either side of those two had and these are the numbers;
0-2-1-1-1-7-0-0-9-2-4-0-3-0
Guess which two were the planes? :( |

I actually voted a 7 for each of them and did think about how odd it was that there were 2 almost identical entries taken at what appears to be the very same moment but gave it the benefit of the doubt as from experience I know that these crazy coincidences do happen. And the fact that each was taken on a different day and location is amazing too. Do you 2 guys know each other by the way?

I would have probably guessed a score of 5.6-5.8 before voting started had I saw either one. Whatever wow factor those photos had is all supplied by the subject itself and not anything done technique wise or artistically by the photographer. No offense intended but they are just snap shots that happen to fit the challenge theme well. We've all taken them from time to time and they almost always score around 5.6. Actually, I would have expected a lower score since there were more than one (i.e. it loses whatever uniqueness it had going in).

Ah, I didn't notice those 1s. I've never understood the mindset of those who give out 1s so easily. If those photos really deserved a 1 then we better extend the voting scale into the negative numbers to accomodate the truly bad photos.

This surprises me coming from you, yanko (the bolded part).
I'm really curious - I know you've photographed a lot of subjects, you have tried to capture jets like this haven't you? My point is, there is a camera technique and a photographer technique involved. It's not just point at the sky and shoot. |

LOL, glad someone other than me made that point!
As to the snap shot comment, there is a whole subdivision on photography based around these airshows, and it isnt that easy to get anything moving that fast with a long lens, sort of like sport photography. While this isn't the best airplane shot I've ever seen, or the best of the days shooting for that matter, I went hoping to get this sort of image for this challenge, but with some background. I did get some decent shots with Alcatraz as the backdrop instead of blue sky, which would make for a stronger image, but getting anything moving at 500 miles an hour is a bit more difficult than my average snapshot.

Oh I agree there is technique involved. I was speaking to the wow factor aspect, which in my opinion was subject driven. There was a similar shot a while back that won a ribbon where not only did the subject (i.e. the jets) had wow factor but also the way it was presented compositionally, hence why it was a stand out.
Btw, I have shot jets before but not at air shows. They were flyovers during ceremonies to honor the fallen. Probably not the same thing but they do move fast. I've also tried my hand at shooting stock cars. There's a local track where I live and I've been meaning to go back there for the right challenge, but so far I haven't had any luck scheduling wise. When they run races there aren't any challenge themes that fit and when there are, they are not running races that week. A shame because I can probably even get them to let me shoot at track level.
