Hope you can help me...

I have a friend who has a Windows XP machine, uses AOL Broadband and would like to connect his new iBook (OS X) to the broadband connection.

I know that you can get a router with built in modem etc to connect that way, but the thing that I'm not sure about is how to connect.

I know that AOL uses it's own browsing program etc, so would putting your username etc into the router's connection program let you connect? or, does it have to connect via AOL's own software?

He'd prefer to use wireless, but can go wired if need be...

Any other question, please ask away :-)

Not trying to cut you short here but have you contacted AOL Tech Support ? They're very helpful & I especially like their followup procedure . PH # 888-346-3704 Good Luck !

You didn't say whether you friend has a USB or an Ethernet router???
To share any sort of data between two computers you must have some sort of Hub/Switch. These can be picked up fairly cheap or sometimes built into the router. Not sute about the Windows/Mac setup though?? I would have thought both machines used TCP/IP routing but i'm not too sure about the Mac.
As far as AOL goes....... i'm not even sure the AOL helldesk know how it works!!!!

Let me know if you need any more info

They have a USB modem, but a router would be the hub between the computers.

The router that I have uses DHCP so I would expect others to have it too, so the IP Addresses would be automatically assigned. OSX uses TCP/IP so the connection wouldn't be a problem.

I can't try AOL because I'm not at their machine, and I don't have their account details.

I think my question is, do they have to use AOL's program to connect to the internet, or can their username and password be entered into the rounter's connection program to connect that way?

If you had an Ethernet router and hub you should (i would imagine) just be able to point the Mac at the internet gateway using it's own ID's???

Don't know if there would be any issues with sharing the broadband connection through a PC to a Mac?

Have a look at this it may help

Sorry pressed the wrong button!!!

If you can get the PC and Mac on the same network i don't see why the internet sharing shouldn't work?

As long as the PC is switched on and logged in to the internet you should be able to log straight in.

You can connect both of them to the internet, but you need an Ethernet-based modem rather than the USB one, plus a router. The router is programmed to connect using one of your less-used AOL screen names (add a new one if you don't have an "extra"); once the router connects to the 'net, you, can browse with any software or log into AOL using their software.

If your friend got the modem "free" by signing up for the AOL Broadband, have them contact tech support for broadband and tell them they are "having trouble" with the USB modem, and they should be able to trade it in for an Ethernet modem -- they sent me the new modem, and gave me two weeks to return the old one..

You may need to RUN the router from the PC to establish the connection, but once it's up and running the Mac should connect to the 'net OK.
