i will be buying myself a 5d around christmas time as a jolly ole' present to myself. BUT, unfortunately, due to lack of money, I have to buy it used. This is the first time I will be buying a used camera, and since im spending over $1000 on it, i dont want to get scammed. How much shutter actuations is a good amount, and how much it too much?

You wont be able to tell how many actuations it has. :(

It also depends if the person you buy it off is a pro or a casual shooter.. 10,000 maybe would be acceptable although as I said, there is no way of telling.

Cannot read the shutter actuations on the 5D. Maybe Canon aparatchiks can do this, but not me. I would be interested in comments from anyone who knows how to read the shutter actuations on a 5D. Maybe CSC would know how to do this.

The 5D.... "Durability-tested to 100,000 exposures, the Canon EOS 5D's shutter should last through twice as many actuations as the 20D - or half as many as the 1-Series bodies."

hmmmm, well that explains why none of the sellers list that. So I guess looking at how long theyve had it should tell me something

mmmm, maybe.. I know my 5D is probably sitting around the 20,000 - 30,000 mark - and its seen some heavy use over the past 2 years. I think you would be hard pressed to find a 5D nearing the 100,000 mark.. You can probably tell how much it has been used by the general condition of it, I know my 5D the shutton button action feels `softer` than it did when I purchased it.

Too bad you'll be buying so soon, my 5D probably is sitting in the 5-10,000 mark (and likely toward the lower end). I'm not quite ready to sell it though because I'm not quite ready to upgrade. Can you wait 30-60 days?
