This is in no way meant as a comment on any current challenge entry, but it seems photo borders are getting bigger and more elaborate and therefore more intrusive. Either that or I'm just noticing them more. Since a new rule about maximum border size would be hard -- not to mention joyless -- to enforce, how about getting rid of borders altogether?
Just a suggestion!
Never mind! :-D

I prefer to keep the borders. |

I hadn't noticed them getting more intrusive. I've noticed that typically borders hurt the scores of my entries, so I've used them less and less over time. But every once in a while, a border perfectly compliments a shot and helps set a mood, which is why I think they're valuable.
Just my thoughts. =) |

Yep. Plus, the neutral grey bg used on DPChallenge isn't always flattering to some images and a border helps offset that. |

Exactickily. ;] I don't use them as much as before but understand their use in certain images. To get rid of them would be counter productive to the photographer's creativity I think. |

I wouldn't mind seeing borders simplified, but not necessarily eliminated. |

I don't use much in the line of borders - maybe just a simple framing to offset my image from the gray DPC background. However, I do not agree with eliminating them. Just because some don't like them is no reason to tell those who do that they cannot have them. |

You are probably right. Like so many other aspects of DPC, I guess it comes down to one person (in this case, me!) getting tired of some overused feature and having to figure out for himself whether it will affect his voting or not. |

I don't use borders much so that rule would not bother me. But I can see where it would bother some people. If you don't like a border someone has used, tell them and, if you feel it necessary, vote them down. |

Or perhaps simplified by keeping them symmetrical? |

I love borders! The more elaborate the better. I realize it's a minority opinion around here, and I'm often penalized when I choose to use one on a challenge entry. It's a choice I make. I had two recent dq's in a row over borders. The one in basic I understand, the one in advanced threw me. But I look at it like this: I can give an unframed print to someone as a gift and they can pick up a cheap dollar store frame and hang it in their house, or I can pick out a beautiful mat & frame, frame it then give it as a gift and they can hang it in their house. Which would you prefer they and their guests discuss? Posting online without a border is the same as giving the unframed print. |

I let it affect my voting. The border is part of the presentation. If you add a border to your photograph, you are asking it to be considered along with the rest of the image. I have scored higher because a border perfectly set off an image; no reason why I can't score lower because a border ruins an image. |

Here we go again trying to limit creativity.
ONE person does not like borders.... so let's get rid of them or limit their use or make them simpler or use two colours or make them symmetrical or .... sheesh. LOLOLOLOLOLOL
Have fun people....

I concur. I don't know what came over me. Lately I'm annoyed at all the "we have to change this on DPC" posts, and now I started one myself! |

I don't see whats wrong with borders at all. I seem to get called out for mine a lot lately, but I don't care, IMO I like the effect they can have in complimenting a shot and keeping it contained against the background of the site.
There is a reason why people FRAME photographs and artwork, the border sort of mimics that.
If you don't like it then score it down, I think getting rid of them would be a bad move. |

Yes, as I said above, the suggestion was a momentary glitch in my Monday morning system. I do not want to limit creativity. I apologize for not thinking it through before I posted. |

I think we need to have a borders challenge - no photographs allowed. Just the most creative use of a border to envelop a completely white space...

Borders might enhance photographs - especially those that are lacking in something. But I find that I vote them down - for instance Achoo's blue ribbon shot just got a 6 from me. I felt it was overbearing and partially hid the subject of the photo. Luckily for that photographer, no one agreed with me. However, I do vote down overbearing fames. I think that's the key, if you don't like it, vote it down. |
