I see many images that I cannot trace back to the original brown and so those I wont give score or comments on. I can only vote if I can compare the image to the brown.

Then you may not get 20% since the challenge theme CLEARLY said to put the original # in the description, not the title.

Yes unfortunately that is so. Bad luck. I found that pretty dumb as well and dont know what good that is. After all I want to be able to compare during voting and not after. So for those that thought a bit further and realized this and put a link to the original in their title it will be beneficial as far as my vote is concerned.
That's what this challenge is all about. Improving on a BROWN. If you cant see the BROWN you cant compare and thus the image is meaningless in that context.

I agree with ThingFish. After carefully reviewing each entry, I found that about 80% provided a convenient way to look up the homage Brown image. That was a lot of fun. Those who missed the technique used in the previous Brown challenge created a great amount of frustration.

Yeah, the DPC SC created the frustration by indicating where the original # should be placed.

Way to punish those who followed instructions.

My title is actually the challenge title that the image came from, after all finding the brown in any challenge is easy.

But the narrow minded will remain so.

This all gets so pitiful and predictable.

Poster #1: I'm going to vote down all the blah, blah, blah's... because of my interpretation of such and such...
Poster #2 to #6: Yes, me too! Good idea!!
Poster #7: Hey wait! That's so unfair, I'm going to vote blah, blah, blah's up... because my interpretation is such and such...
Poster #8 to #12: Yes, me too! Good idea!!
Poster #13: But it says...
Poster #14: Yes, but it doesn't say...
Poster #13: Number 14, you are a poopiehead...
Poster #14: Your mom!

Jeez Louise! Every week, week in and week out.

How about everyone votes like this... Vote the way you want and keep it to yourself! Wouldn't we all be so much happier that way?

My final conclusion:
I will vote like it's an OPEN CHALLENGE: Wont even bother to check on the original browns anymore.
But it does make the whole BROWN Challenge rather futile. Might as well just have called it an OPEN CHALLENGE then.
And I might as well have just taken a shot of anything instead of limiting myself to the BROWN challenge theme then.

The question is: how close to the original brown does it have to be? Some entries are clearly a recreation with better lighting, color and sharpness. Others are what Hollywood would call a "reimagining". Sort of like the 70's Battlestar Galactica vs the present one. Based on the same idea, but still totally different. It's an individual choice as to how much you let that effect your vote. I am going with "inspired by" as sufficient for this. Some photos can't be completely recreated, but I can still see the relationship.

Starting to approach a passable score for something that I think is worth better than it's currently doing. My beef as usual, is people who low vote you, but will not tell you why in their opinion, it is so poor.

Just to clear something up:
Here is the history of how I came to my conclusion regarding the BROWN challenge:

My Original post:
Going to start voting and giving comments. I have decided to only vote and give comments on entries that have given an IMAGE ID and/or title so that I can go back and look at the original brown to compare it and base my vote and comment on that. I see many images that I cannot trace back to the original brown and so those I wont give score or comments on. I can only vote if I can compare the image to the brown.

Fred

REACTION TO MY POST:

That would be a shame. You'll miss out on great entertainment. There are some really creative and inspiring images in this challenge. I thoroughly enjoyed comparing each entry to its Brown ribbon "inspiration". It made me smile and laugh and stand in awe of the photographic talent. To avoid this joy ride would be something I would not want to miss. It was easy to open two browser windows. One for voting/comments and the other to research the Brown Ribbon source.

As for the images w/o connection (or w/o convenient reference), there's nothing wrong with voting on them as a Free Study. But, frankly, several of those unconnected images in this challenge do not make sense out of context, except as a stand alone image.

A positive comment and vote from Thingfish, including his explanation of how he has decided to vote and why. Not sure whether I should take that as a DNMC comment.

I followed the rules and put the brown ribbon info in the detail section of my entry, not in the title. It will be frustrating if that hurts my score or causes people not to vote on it. It's not hard to figure out which photo I based mine on if you look at the thread with the compilation of all the recent brown ribbons though.

I followed the rules, too. But,where was the rule you read prohibiting placing reference info in the title? The entries would not make sense out of the context of the Brown Ribbon ...to which they are paying homage. Check out the previous Brown Ribbon Deja Vu. //www.dpchallenge.com/challenge_results.php?CHALLENGE_ID=820

Well, technically she's ( Wenders11) correct - the "rules" (read "description" I guess) says nothing about putting anything in the title referencing the original "Brown" the new image is based on.

We haven't yet required people to look at prior challenges as part of the "rules".

Would putting something in your title to help out the voters be smart? IMO, yes, but NOT required.
