Normally I would be happy with a score like this, but comments about giving me a four simply because I didn't put the brown ribbon reference in the title are making me a little bitter about this challenge. |

I know exactly what you mean, I can take DNMC votes on the chin but this is the first challenge where the scoring has really got to me, especially as it's the voters that are DNMC not that actual entries .... I certainly wont enter another redo challenge .... looking forward to monday and forgetting about this challenge :( |

I put the Brown Ribbon referance in my title and I'm STILL getting hammered so I think it's just very stingy voters out right now. I'm finally at 106 votes but now down to 5.66 from 5.70 and previously 5.85 |

Why? How can people be expected to score it fairly if they can't find the original you are "improving" and make the comparison? Without that original it's a free study...
But don't worry. I have stopped voting shy of the 20% mark while I re-evaluate; I may just let the system punt all my votes on this challenge. In fact I probably will...

Which presumably is a good thing? Who wouldn't want to go to the back of the line in this challenge? Or maybe someone missed the "Brown is the new Blue" memo.
Unfortunately, my score has risen by a few hundredths. Oh that it would "drop like a stone". So tough to hit the low 2's anymore :( |

'Fraid so... But I'm in a situation where I can't seem to vote this rationally across the board, and that bothers me a lot. It's my problem, not the shooters' — there was nothing in the challenge that required them to reveal their inspiration in the title, so I have basically been setting up arbitrary hoops for folks to jump through. But I don't feel like voting this as a Free Study, so I am going to abstain.

It's frustrating because we're being scored on something that wasn't in the rules. I actually thought about putting the brown ribbon info in my title but then I remembered that it specifically said to put it in the detail section, so I figured that's what everyone else would do. Then when the challenge started I realized that I was one of the few people who went strictly by the rules and as a result people were voting my shot lower. I normally wouldn't care so much but I'm just ridiculously proud of this shot and I really thought I had a shot at a ribbon.
If people didn't like my photo and voted it low because of that, it would be totally fine, but knowing that I might be out of ribbon territory simply because I followed the rules and put my info in the details like we were told to is frustrating.
I suppose I should have known that people would want to compare it to the origional, but since the instructions told us to put it in the details I figured that there must be a reason that they wanted us to wait until after the challenge was over to compare. I shouldn't have been such a rule follower, but no one clued me in on the unwritten rule that the info should go in the title.
I'm totally just whining and I know it doesn't matter, I've just been grumpy about DPC this week, lol. I'll know better the next time we have a comparison challenge, I guess.
Edit:Bearmusic, I didn't mean to single you out, lots of people voted that way. I'm sorry that people like me made it difficult to vote. :)

I just assumed mention of 'description' was a mistake and thought 'they must mean title' otherwise it made little sense. I had already looked at the previous déjàvu challenges and had noted that people referenced the original in the title. |

I do not believe the rules stated that you SHOULD NOT place such info in the title. Of course, the logical thing would have been for the powers to be to have required that it SHOULD be placed in the title and not in the description, as that would be the only way for voters to judge on: 1)whether or not the challenge is being met and 2)on the merits of the photo. Again, there was nothing in the rules to prevent you from putting the brown ribbon reference in your title.

You didn't single me out. And the decision was made before you posted anyway. I have gotten complaints in PMs, and I have listened to them.
As others have remarked, IMO when we have a deja vu challenge there should be a special rule REQUIRING reference to the original in the title, and mandating DQ for images that do not do this. That would solve the problem. Or what I perceive as a problem anyway; others may not agree. Which is why I stopped voting.

IF I vote in this challenge, I am going to vote on the quality of the photograph, not how much they improved it from the first challenge.
Of course, to do this, I have to assume that the photographer actually used a last place entry as inspiration. For me, I do not feel compelled to compare it to the original. |

I think you are argueing with yourself here :) NO ONE has disputed that you could put the brown ribbon in the title.
I'm really a bit over the whole issue!! Obviously it was an oversight by the admin. Now it̢۪s just about whether you feel comfortable in how you vote and if you̢۪re not comfortable then don̢۪t vote at all, plenty of other challenges to vote on and enter. |

I thought the whole point of a dpchallenge contest was to meet the challenge in the first place, then judge the quality of the photo, I guess I am totally wrong or at least confused about the concept, particularly when I hear a site council mamber member argue that meeting the challenge is irrelevant and that one should judge a photo regardless of whether the challenge is met or not. If that is the case change the name of the site to dpfreestudy.com and forget the challenge charade.

I agree. Maybe they're assuming that everyone already knows to do that, but I think it needs to be more clear. I'll know better next time, but there are always going to be new people coming along who don't.
And with that said, I'm all done whining about this challenge. You can all return to your regularly scheduled programing. :) |

Finally hit 100 votes! By the way, knock it off scoring turds high. Give 'em what they deserve! My turd keeps getting bumped up. Better check the bottom of your shoes before you go back inside.

There are so few voters in this challenge that I think maybe those of us who don't normally vote in challenges we enter, rethink our decision on this particular challenge. We are probably the ones who are more familiar with the Brown Ribbon winners since we researched it a bit to find which one we wanted to redo. I think most other voters don't want to go through the hassle of looking up all the Browns to compare them to the entries. So, for this challenge which I've entered, I'll vote before rollover. |

Hello senor_kasper,
I totally agree with you. The whole idea is to look at the photo and judge whether the photo meet the challenge in the first place or not, then the quality, the creativity, technicality etc of the photo. However, some photos do not meet the challenge at all but because the photographers are better than some of us, plus that they are better at post-processing using Photoshop (or any editing software), their photos rank higher than us ours.
For instance, the "Apple" entry. The instruction was "an apple". There are photos with many apples and I know they will score better than my entry because I still suck at Photoshop. A member argued that it can be many apples in the entry but photograph AN apple creatively. I agree provided that THE (or AN) apple is the MAIN subject and the rest are not (in bokeh or whatever form). There are photos with all apples in one basket or at one place. All in sharp focus. I wonder which is THE or AN apple which is being photographed creatively. But I know it will score higher than my photo because it's more beautiful.
Perhaps the SC should look at the photos first before the official voting starts. Weed out all the DNMC photos and let us vote the ones which truly meet the challenge and instruction!
Perhaps, I'm the one with the problem! Haha. Perhaps, it's because I was from the teaching background. I expect my students to read the clear instruction and to understand, and give me what the question requires.
My score is still dropping!
Ang
