I don't have one to post right now, but I just saw a book on a co-worker's desk which is nothing but photographs of shoes! I'll try and track down the ISBN in case you don't have it already. |

Believe it or not, this one didn't really do very well in the motion blur challenge! I thought it was creative, well executed, and nice to look at.

The shoes were my mothers dance shoes. This was entered in the Nostalgia challenge. |

I have never ever understood why people do that.
Maybe someone could enlighten me. |

well in highly "diverse" and lower income areas it's said to be an area to let drug buyers know that there are dealers in the area. that's one reason. but it also depends on the city.

Unfortunately nobody really knows what they signify, if anything. Here is the Snopes Urban Legends reference on the tradition... |

You may want to reconsider the title Strange Fruit as it's a wee bit insenstive. In the Billie Holiday song, 'strange fruit' refers to lynching, i.e., the bodies of black men hanging from the trees. Some might take offense at a photo like this trivializing the power of Holiday's metaphor. I'm not trying to be the PC police. I just thought it may not have occured to you.

That's an interesting thought but I don't know...I see shoes haning over wires all the time in all different kinds of neighborhoods. I always figured it was a prank. I know that the time I saw a pair of Doc Martin's hanging on a wire on Benevolent St. on the East Side (Brown and RISD campus, very wealthy neighborhood) it was not in a drug dealing neighborhood. People on the East Side have to go elsewhere in Providence to buy most drugs (except for grass). I think if the drug thing was true, cops would have caught on and dealer's would be using some other signal. In my old neighborhood in Providence there was definitely dealing going on (frequently right at the end of my street) and no one needed a signal to figure it out. This shoe thing sounds like an urban myth to me. Just my opinion of course. Who knows?

This is one of the first pictures I took with my G5, so it's rather old-ish. I hadn't opened it or fiddled with it in ages, so I decided to fix it up a bit when I saw this thread. It's pretty badly done, but I still think it's cute :)

These are 2 outtakes from a challenge sometime last year; I can't remember which. Only as I recall the photo I did enter didn't do too well.
