I was at Galleons sporting goods store the other day and I noticed a product in the camping gear section that may be useful for travelling photogs.
In a forum a week or so ago, someone commented that they are concerned about travelling with their tripod on the outside of their gear bag because it sends a fairly clear message that they are carrying camera equipment, thus targeting them for theft.
The product is a carrying bag for ThermaRest camping mattresses. ThermaRests come in a variety of sizes, so the bags do as well. You could get a bag that's just the right size for your tripod and store it confidently on the outside of your pack. |

Also have a bag that says Lowepro, Tamrac, etc doesn't help. Good idea.

A good friend ot mine, a professional photographer who flew quite often, stowed all his camera equipment in the most beat-up old Coleman ice chest you ever saw. It was "secured" with one of those suitcase straps. (No would would even think they wanted that piece of junk.)
On the inside, he had clevery cut out foam and made nice "pockets" for his camera bodies, lenses.... |

Hey, the ice chest is brilliant. I have one of those nasty old soft-sided fabric coolers (about big enough for a 6-pak & a fat hoagie)... maybe that's my future camera bag. The nice thing is the whole top hinges up with a zipper for easy access. |

A Ritz worker suggested the same thing at one of their camera classes. I think it's a great idea. Not as nice to carry as a backpack, but still a good idea.

For Christmas last year my dad got me a HUGE toilitries kit. I know I'm a girl, but I don't think even Cher could fill that thing up. So what I use it for now is carrying around my camera. It's great for keeping my docking port and all those wires straight 'cause of all the little pockets on the side.

Another good one is a Pyrex dish warmer for your laptop |
