I requested some help with senior portriats, here, just a couple of days ago and received a lot of excellent advice.
I wanted to post the five "favorites" here to get your reactions and see if there are any recommendations for post processing. These images have only been resized for posting.
Thanks again for all of your help! This was a new experience for me and the advice from dpc was much appreciated.

I agree the last one has a lot of feel to it. The DOF really stands out giving more interest in the photo. Good job for a first try. :) |

I'd go with the last one as well. I left you some comments on it. |

I agree, the last one is the best. Are you using any kind of fill flash? It doesn't seem to be the case. Flash fill might brighten your subject just enough to give that extra bit of contrast to make her "pop".

A number of people had suggested a small fill flash, but that is one recommendation that slipped my mind that afternoon. Now that I look back, that would have helped alot. I'll have to practice with some fill flash so it seems more natural too me if/when I do this again.

i might suggest black and white - i did a conversion on the last one - and it seemed good to me. i am a BW fan though - especially when its people.
i used the hue and saturation adjustment layers method - if interested i can post it.
nice set of photos though.

Hey, David,
Congrats on the set. Good job. I like the last one for the tones (nice even lighting without too many shadows). For compositional work I like 3 and 4 better. I think that if you cropped 3 vertically so that the yellow pole was out of the shot and performed a selective lightening layer across the right side of the face you'd have a good place from which to start with your normal workflow processes (layers, brightness/contrast, hue/saturation, etc). I like the angles in 4 the best, though. The lines aren't exactly horizontal, you get enough curves from the subject's face and arms so that she keeps an organic feel while surrounding her with straight wooden and metal lines. Two is nice except for the harder shadows around her nose and mouth. I like the angle you took looking down onto her in that 2nd shot.
Shoot some more and post 'em out here. These are a great beginning.
Kev

Thanks again for the input!
Can you offer any more information on how to do a selective lightening layer?

She really wants a black and white, so that work will begin tonight. I think you're right about the last one being a good place to start for that.

for BW - i used digidaans action to do the conversion ( a slightly higher hue value than the default, flattened the image, adjusted curves slightly ( for contrast ), and ran unsharp mask.
one last step might be to dodge the eyes a tad...

I spent some time last night working on a black and white of the last image from above.
I went a little high key in order to draw more attention to her dark eyes. With that same thought in mind, I sharpened the eyes and left the rest of the image a little soft. I also cropped to 5X7 format to remove some of the far left and right from the original.
Once again, any input would be greatly appreciated!

Fantastic! I am partial to b&w, but this really draws the attention to the eyes even more - which is where attention should be in a portrait. The first was great, but this punches it up a few knotches. :)
