So I'm talking to a client last week when her mother suddenly states, "I'll need you to use a filter for every photo that includes me." Of course my first reaction is WTF, but I simply asked what type of filter she would like me to use. She got very frustrated and explained that the photographer on her last cruise offered to use a filter and the results were amazing. She was proud to also add that she only needed a #1 filter but that her mother looked great with a #2. She then looked at me as though I was completely incompetent and walked away to offer advice on another topic. I explained to my client that there would be an additional charge for every photo where I had to use a "filter". I know I can apply a skin softening filter in photoshop and then mask it to only affect her mother, but I still have no idea what filter had been applied on the cruise. Anybody actually pay attention to the cruise photographer so they can explain this to me??

Thanks again,
~ Dave

They don't PP on cruises, that's all about turnover. The "filter" will be a softening filter, it imparts a nice glow. #1 is weak, #2 medium, #3 extreme. Lemme dig up a shot I just made testing my new #1 and post it, hang on.

Smear tons of vasaline over a cheap skylight that'll make her skin look soft ;)

Haha should have given her the reply "Oh that would be a soft focus style filter it makes your skin look so much better than it actually is" LOL you might not have got the job though ;)

Thank you!! I get the feeling that I will find out, once again, that I am incompetent and this is one of those things that every real photographer knows.

If it's that bad ma'am we might be better off leaving the lens cap on for every shot? ;)

Yeah, i would go with the lens cap on, even leaving the camera at home might work out well too!

Nah, it's fairly esoteric unless you're a PPoA shooter LOL. I never actually used one before, but one of our members sent me his. It's pretty cool. Here it is; see how nice and soft the highlights are? Will be great for skin tones.

Make sure you charge extra extra $$$ to leave lens cap on.

I'm searching B&H just to see one, but I don't think I could make myself screw one of those onto the end of my 70-200 2.8L. I almost teared up just thinking about it.

Here's a few shots I've taken using a Tiffen Soft Fx 3 filter...

They can come in handy at times.

just throw on a UV filter telling them its a "soft filter" then do the adjustments on a PS. The lady sounds kinda like a b!%*h, huge pet peeve of mine is when some one is telling me what they want in a image but talking down to me like they know more about photography then I do.

Yeah, me too... Only they usually do. But I'm not gonna let that stop me.

Once again I'm reminded how much I don't know about photography. Thanks for pointing out the softening filters and the example. I've been readying about the options and now I'm wondering if I am better off with an actual filter on the lens or leaving the softening to post processing. As usual, there are opinions both ways. A number of people suggest that software filters don't match the affect of the original Ziess Softar filters.

I'd say yes, for portrait work. Remember you can shoot it both ways, then if the soft filter isn't what you want you have a sharp image to work on instead.

I would go with a Godzilla filter. It does wonders...

You should've seen her before the filter was used!

You know what I would of said to that B!tch, "Here's my #1 (using my middle figure), and tell her that there isn't a filter for ugly".
