I'm pleased with how it placed, I was just curious if the other one would have done better. Now I know! Thanks for the input, but I'm not sure that I thank you for proving my husband right... :P |
Your husband is a smart man... good to see that you listen to him... now if only I could get my wife to listen to me ;) |

naw, most of the time I don't listen to him. I actually asked a couple of very smart people on here, and they accidentally liked the same one he did ! :P |

Ask your husband what did he do to impress the girls when he was a teenager, what he did to impress you to go out with him, and what he is still doing to show that you are that special woman in his life. Then ask him to look at the pictures...simple choice... |

Wendy-I'm curious what you find interesting about the skateboard image, visually or otherwise?
Technically speaking, I don't care which one is better. An interesting moment far far outweighs technicals. Personally I don't find the kid the slightest bit interesting. As a SP it's just a person walking away, not a terribly unique thing, unless you were showing me something else...?
You mention the first one being too cluttered...
Streets are cluttered, scenes are cluttered, that's the reality and that's what makes it cool. That's what makes it Street...the energy that people, dirt, traffic etc bring into the image. I suppose that's exactly why I don't enter the Street Challenges here. Way too many folks bring baggage to the genre that squarely doesn't belong and if they shoot or vote with that criteria in mind whole subject is a wash.
For discussion sake here's the same image as yours but with a few small twists that I find more interesting...
...and on the subject of energy

That's what I was worried about, as well. I don't have a problem with clutter--street photography, imo, is about catching the scene as best as you can. Some scenes are worth capturing, but can't be captured perfectly. I actually liked all three shots very much, but people couldn't agree on what street photography was, and I did get a comment that the background was busy. I have a tendency to submit based on what I think people's baggage will be, not on my favorite photo.
I still do like the skateboarder walking away. I like the lines and the colors. I think I'm remembering the moment through the camera more than the shot, as well. the greens and reds just glowed in the evening light. I couldn't get the same feel because of basic editing.

Whoever made the comment "that the background was busy" should be batted over the head (with a Leica Rangefinder) and banned from voting in a Street Challenges...until they've been re-educated. Am I being too harsh...lolol?
Listening to fools is a big problem that I had for a while. When I shut them out I then started to take images that I think have greater value.
Again, a primo reason not to enter Street Challenges. Too many people voting have absolutely no idea...no clue when it comes to the genre. Their collective judgment is probably more detrimental to the whole topic than a help. Anything creative, original, different...unfamiliar, would have tanked. Personally, I'd rather be original than boring given the choice.
Here goes some DPC tabooo...ready...?
The top 3 placers are SP comfort food..."go to" cliches. The internet is experiencing a million and a half uploads of those exact images, as we speak. Pretty boring. I mean, Nixter takes those in his sleep...

The deal is, the winners are often the images that manage avoid the low votes. I have started gauging many of my entries on factors other than where they place in the challenge. I have had many successful sub-fivers and some decent scoring shots that I consider boring. Your street shots, or my ridiculous humor, often does not have high scoring mass appeal. |

It's like cooking a high-end gourmet meal for a 4 year olds birthday party...with expensive matching wines.
Starting Course: Sea Urchin with a Lime Minted Olive Oil, Black Pepper and Red Sea Salt served with an Unfiltered Sparkling Sake
Plenty of left-overs...ya think? ;)

Hmpf. I think another female should be heard from, here. I like looking at the fountain shot for the detail and the way the boy follows the man. But, the shot you entered is the best of the 3--in a street photography category. It has a visually interesting location, which is important, & a poignant moment in the human interaction, which is very important. Composition & technicals are good. The color adds to the shot, too. I enjoyed the guy doing his best to impress the unimpressable girls.
Street photography is a specialty, kind of like sorts photography, where the talented phtogs make it look easy but also where the 'rules' which are so clear to the the talented photogs are a mystery to the hopeful ones like me. I can take pictures in the street, but that does not make it street photographpy. |
