I'm going to add ram to my Mac Pro. I'm looking to add 4 gigs. My Simple question is this: is it better to add 1 gig sticks or 2 gig sticks and why?

Thank you.

The larger the capacity, the more slots available. Other than that you can go either way. Paired RAM is more efficiently used than odd couples. In your case, I'd go 2x2.

(You may wish to purchase inexpensive non-Apple RAM).

Well 2GB, but only because it'll leave more slots open for future upgrades. Otherwise, there's no significant benefit either way. Matched pairs will give you a slight performance edge, and you'll save lots of money if you buy RAM from someplace other than Apple.

I am by no means a computer expert, but.... computers have a limited number of slots, so if you add 4 sticks (assuming there are 4 slots available), you probably won't have room to add more ram in the future.

Exactly what scalvert said. I don't know about the US but if you go to www.ramcity.com.au you will be able to specify your machine type, model etc, and then it will tell you exactly what sort of RAM you need. After that you just take a note and go buy it some place that isn't Apple.

Well my Mac Pro has 8 slots and currently has 2 gig filled by four 512 sticks, I was planning to get two 2 gig sticks leaving me two slots, but I could just get one 4 gig stick if there is no real benefit one way or the other. If RAM is RAM is RAM, I"ll do bigger single sticks.

A 4GB module will cost several times more than two 2GB modules. I'd go for the pair of 2GB sticks. That still leaves two slots, and if you REALLY need more you'd only be replacing 512MB modules.

Good sources for RAM include owcomputing.com, ramjet.com, crucial.com and transintl.com. You can go even cheaper at newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com, but make sure you know the exact memory specs before ordering from them (similar Mac Pro models can have different memory specs). Dealram.com is a great site for price comparisons, and they only list reputable merchants.

Just a word of caution before you buy non-Apple RAM - do you have AppleCare? If so, there might be some benefit in ensuring that your new RAM is also covered - of course if the system breaks, you can remove the 3rd party RAM and claim but if the problem was the RAM you'd be on your own. However, Apple RAM is sufficiently expensive that even this might not justify the initial expense.

Thanks Shannon. I needed to upgrade my system too.. 2GB wasn't sufficient to work with multiple layers, picked up 4GB from owcomputing.
