It was not dropped, bumped or anything....is this a feature that is repairable??? or very costly??
I put my 50mm on the camera and it does autofocus, so I believe this is just a lens issue??

any ideas?

Thanks

I assume you have tried this, but make sure the M/A -- M switch is set to M/A (manual/automatic focus) on the side of the lens. I would cycle it all the way to M, then back to M/A.

And make sure the camera is set to autofocus as well!

yep....I did try those both....but thanks....

hmm...

I did have a time where it did the same thing to me, and the switch had (in handling by me at some point) had just come off the M/A setting so slightly that it looked fine, but a quick nudge and it came back alive. Since you have taken it off the camera (effectively powered it down) have you re-mounted and tried again? Sometimes a full power down is helpful. But, beyond that, it sounds like a nikon service thing. I guess it may not be under warranty? How long have you had it?

Oh, and maybe we need a SC request to change this thread's title to include "Only D90 owners need respond" :-)) I can see by your choice of camera that you are both wise and discerning folks.

My 18-55mm AFS just died on my about a month ago. It was about 16 months old. A trip back to Nikon, a new autofocus motor, and $115 dollars later, it is good as new. It seems to be a common problem with these AF-S lenses.

I've had it about 1 1/2 yrs....bought on ebay....but new on ebay...I contacted my local nikon dealer and he seems to think it could be a dirty contact, or possibly covered under warranty...I'm to bring my sales receipt ( hope my paypal receipt works)...and he'll send it off...

BUT I think I will take it up for a quick assessment...but I have to take a senior's shots in the next week or two, so I can't send it....guess I'll just be manually focussing for that session...
Thanks for all the advice...

and chromeydome :-) it does seem that us D90 owners seem to have the same lenses!!

This may sound silly, but is your battery fully charged? I notice when my battery is low the AF is the first thing to go.

PS: I also couldn't get my camera to fire the other day, then noticed I had set it to timer delay. D'oh!

Only other "it might save you" check I can think of -- make sure none of the focus-lock buttons have gotten stuck (try to press/release all three of them all several times -- make sure you can feel a positive "click" press up and down, etc, etc). They are sealed and shouldn't let any junk in, but I've heard of some units where those buttons get (physically or electrically) stuck in the "down" position.

ETA -- Sorry, I thought this was a 70-200/2.8VR lens. Misread subject. Doh! Leaving my post in case anyone happens across this thread with the same issue on a 70-200VR lens.

thanks everyone....there is not one silly suggestion....in fact that is why I started the thread, in case I did something stupid on a setting.

I have had that issue with my 18-200 tried everything to get it to work, checked all switches and settings, cleaned all the contacts etc, Then I got frustrated and banged it against the armrest on our recliner which is padded, That did the trick, have not had any problems with it since, Infact I have been using it alot the past few weeks. I think something inside the lens was out of wack and one good bump popped it back into place. I would not suggest trying this as a cure all fix however. Only if you get mad like I was at the time. :)
