We were traveling through Nevada, and I said to my wife, "I thought Nevada would be barren and desolate, but it's so lovely!" She replied, "Only YOU would think that!" So now I question whether I'm just weird, or is Nevada really boring?

Perhaps both?

Just kidding - Nevada has some spectacular lighting - when mixed with the scenery makes fantastic images. And it does grow on you, so maybe your wife can be saved.

Are you kidding? Nevada is anything but boring. I agree totally with you and disagree completely with Marianne in this case. It's the layers of desolate space that make it so beautiful, the colours, the shapes, and the fact that you can actually be alone there (like in Wyoming also). I mean, just look at that picture: the brush in the front, the hills, the mountains, the beautiful sky, it's beautiful. I don't think you're weird at all (I'm very normal, and I LOVE Nevada).

Here's a couple more "boring" landscapes, these from Wyoming about a week ago:

EDIT: all four are from the area between Cheyenne and Laramie, in the SE corner of Wyoming. David, I hope you don't mind I posted these in your thread.

In my defense, I didn't say it was boring, but certainly desolate and barren. And of course David and Ursula can make any landscape beautiful.

Ahh, OK, as long as "desolate" and "barren" are considered positive :) I drive my poor husband crazy when we go for drives in the mountains, making him stop all the time - he now sends me out alone.

Nevada scenery is actually pretty exciting. Just have to look a bit differently. One special place: In Sparks, NV, turn onto Pyramid Road (Blvd?) and drive straight for about 35 miles. You come to Pyramid Lake, much of which is controlled by the Paiute tribe. It is spectacular, and for the most part unspoiled. There is one marina where a bunch of white pelicans sometimes hang out and wait for the sports fisherfolk to feed them... In wildflower time (I was there a couple of weeks ago) the blues, purples, yellow and orange flowers will make you glad you have a large capacity Compact Flash Card. Someday I will read the tutorial and post some pictures.

(SORRY CAPS LOCK AT SCHOOL BROKEN!)

I DUNNO, DEPENDS ON WHERE IN NEVADA. THE DRIVE BETWEEN LAS VEGAS AND BAKER IS PRETTY DARN BORING. YOU CAN PULL OVER AND SHOOT SOME JOSHUA TREES AND THE SIGN FOR ZYZZX ROAD, BUT THEN... YOU'RE STILL STUCK IN DEATH VALLEY.

OR MAYBE THAT'S BECAUSE DURING THE 8 TIMES I DROVE THAT, I WAS EITHER READY TO GET HOME OR GO TO SCHOOL...

This seems to be the same with Utah, New Mexico and SW Colorado. You have to go to the right places to see the good stuff. I love the desert anyway, so I am biased to it. Canyons, ruins, rivers, creeks, rock formations...some of the most spectacular in the world, in the 4 aforementioned states (sorry, Arizona, too). LOVE IT!!

Also realize you were traveling in Northern Nevada. Which begins at the end of Clark County in most eyes of Nevadans ;) Hence the reason why they made every other area in Nevada 775 and Clark is now the only county with 702. All the action is Southern Nevada, no matter of your vice...

I think it is more a case of you have to slow down, really look and then you'll see the good stuff.
