On October 19, 2009, in Arlington National Cemetery, the U.S. Army will bid a final farewell to one of their own. Specialist Stephan Mace of the Army's 61st Cavalry Regiment, beloved son, brother, friend, and comrade-in-arms, was one of eight soldiers killed in the Taliban attack on Camp Keating in Afghanistan. In addition to his family and friends, attendees at the funeral will include members of Westboro Baptist Church (based in Kansas), who will protest against the declining morals of the United States and its military.
While I support these self-styled Christians̢۪ first amendment right to present their views in a peaceful manner, I cannot condone such activity in this venue. The only results of their presence will be to inflict more pain on the already grieving family and friends, and to anger all veterans who have served honorably through this nation̢۪s conflicts. Can they be stopped? Legally, they have a right to protest, though measures have been taken in many locations to keep them distant from the burial site. Perhaps the best way to discourage them is to embarrass them, making them aware that their un-Christian behavior is far removed from the lessons of the New Testament.

Charles, restricting free speech and peaceful assembly would do more to dishonor a man sworn to protect the Constitution of the United States.

Then I pray that no one chosing a political & moral fight pursue that arguement during the funeral of one of your loved ones.. There's nothing peaceful about their message.. ironically, it's about restricting the rights of others..

Oh and if you'd like to further reasearch this church group you can find them on this website..

That "church" is really nothing more than a family of haters looking to stir up trouble.

Personally, I think the best way to deal with them would be to "hire" the Hells Angels as security, targeting "church" members specifically.

All I can say is that if "God hates fags", then he must HATE^3 the Westboro Baptist Church.

@ Alan - Please reread my last two sentences. I don't necessarily want to restrict what they say, but where they say it. A funeral is not the proper place to spout their vitriol.

@ Spazmo - The WBC may have changed their mind(?) about appearing at Arlington. According to the schedule on their website, they'll be busy in California and Arkansas tomorrow. Anyway, there'll be a motrocycle group (whose name just now escapes me) on site to provide a buffer.

Let the WBC demonstrate in front of the bulldozer of their choice!

The motorcycle group is called Patriot Guard, they were formed to do just that.

What a great group the Patriot Guard is! I had never heard of them - thanks poser for the information. Here's the website: //www.patriotguard.org/

I have been in the Patriot Guards for about 3 years now, only been on 1 mission here in Tucson.

You can sign up on their website if you want too, or read the stories, my story is in there somewhere.

I took the oath, my father before me, his father also, may he rest in peace. These groups that prevent free speech, even in this type of situation, do nothing more then break his oath as he is laid to rest. This is no worse then the Mormons Baptism of the dead..
