I've got a 5' wide piece of black velvet which I use as a backdrop.
   
I'm using it on a homemade stand that I built out of PVC pipe. The combo has worked great up to this point but I sometimes have problems shooting group portraits. I am going to buy a 10' wide stand and am thinking about sewing 2 pieces together. Since the velvet really eats the light, I don't think the seam down the middle would be a problem? Or would it?
Anyone have any experience with this? |

Whilst I don't have first hand experience with this as such, I AM also into sewing and feel qualified to give you an educated guess here.
I'd say go for it! You are right, the velvet with its light-swallowing qualities shouldn't show a seam up very much at all.
To hide it even more, I would do this:
Sew the two pieces together.
Finger press the seam allowance apart, but don't iron it (you would only emphasize the seam).
Use a toothbrush to tease a few more fibres out of the seam, the ones that are bent over and stuck under the cotton.
Now use a wider, softer brush to cover up your toothbrush tracks.
The rest of it (random gozillas etc) can always be photoshopped away, right? ;-)

| I think it will work...But I did something different for group photos. I shot everyone separately. Then I put them together using photoshop. It worked very well because I lit everyone the same. The lighting I have is only enough for portraits of individuals. It turned out pretty good. |
