I am about to purchase either a 70-200 2.8 or 4 and important to my decision would be some real world experience with autofocus using these lenses with the canon 1.4xII teleconverter.
I am happy with the reviewed image performance of both lenses, concerned about the weight rather than the expense but! know that I definitely want to use the lens with at least a 1.4x teleconverter. The camera body is a 40d and subjects without teleconverter will be indoors and out being candid portaits of moving kids and subjects with teleconverter will be outdoors mostly well lit moving animals hence the need for effective autofocus.
I have a 1300mm manual lens and the shallow depth of field makes accurate autofocus very difficult and the lack of IS means a tripod is essential.
If you have used the above combination of either lens would you please post a report regarding your practical experience with the autofocus system when the teleconverter is fitted.

For those interested, which obviously isn't many but for the purposes of closing the post in case someone searches in the future.
On a 40D body all 9 AF cross sensors work when using the f2.8 and the f4 70-200 L series lenses with a 1.4x teleconverter (kenko teleplus pro 300dg).
The AF is a little slower, doesn't hunt even indoors and works fast enough to be effective in a real life shooting candids of kids setting.
But,af works but both lenses drop an f stop and not that you would use a tele indoors but the f4 even without a tele is too slow for moving subjects inside - you would actively have to stay still in order to get a sharp pic. Double the light is essential and you still find yourself at iso800 without a flash.
So....I purchased the f2.8l 70-200. Love it and am off to the gym to beef up so I can carry it around.
Regards
