For some reason all my photos are 72 dpi. I have a CAnon 50D. I crop a photo and did a few color changes and it was still 72. Is that right or am I doing something wrong? Its a 15Mp camera!

Where do you see that your images are 72dpi? In PS or LR?

And are you shooting .RAW? If you are; what do you use to convert your files from .RAW?

DPI is only relevant in the context of output to a printing device (Dots PER Inch) -- what really matters is the total number of pixels ("dots") present. If you uncheck the "Resample" checkbox in the Image Size dialog you'll see that the resolution and dimensions will change in proportion even though the number of pixels remains constant.

720 pixels at 72 dpi = 10 inches (as printed)

720 pixels at 144dpi = 5 inches

720 pixels at 360dpi = 2 inches

As the General said, DPI is only an abstraction until a piece of paper comes into the scene. Here is a discussion thread from a few months ago that covers it in more detail if you are interested.

The "DPI" is set by the camera as a default. It's absolutely irrelevant to anything you do online. It only comes into play when you make prints. All what the general set. Pay no attention to DPI, don't worry about it being speced at 72 or anything, when it comes time to print you just change the DPI to whatever is the target resolution of your output device.

Does amyone know how to change it on the Canon 50D?

It's default in PS with a screen resolution of 72dpi and a print resolution of 300dpi. You don't have to worry about it at all as have been mentioned in the thread. Just make sure you change it to 300dpi if/when you go to print (as mentioned by Bear_Music).

You can't... I don't think it is set by the camera as bear_music said. Your image is the size in pixels you set it. DPI (Dots per inch) is only for viewing on either screen or print.

You'll find a good explanation here at The Luminous Landscape
