This is one of the more indepth threads I've found on the 300d firmware hacks. I was just wondering if things were still going well with those of you who are using this.
My rebel should be arriving next week and I plan on throwing the hack on the camera once I get used to the regular setup of the camera.
So...things still going well?
Also, have their been new hacks or updates since this thread on the russian hack? |

The last update is the one dating back to the start of this thread in June. It featured FEC, Mirror Lockup, ISO 3200, a few other things and re-assignment of buttons. He also started coding his versions: B7.1 dating to June 16th. Just use the link at the begining of this thread.
I have used this hack since it first came out. I was scared into reverting back to the original firmware back at the begining, as people thought the hack wasn't safe. I have since reinstalled this hack, and have seen absolutely no problems with the camera.
If ever you do install this hacked firmware, and your camera should need servicing, reinstall the original Canon firmware before sending it in. If the camera is "dead", you will not be able to. In that case, if Canon finds out you have the hack, the waranty could be void. Is still seems to be up for debate as to wether or not this is legal, given that there is no cost to the modified hack.
Anyhow, someone told me that if ever the camera is dead upon arriving at a Canon service center, they usually wipe the camera clean in order to restart it. The would wipe the software and never know that you had the hack.
Regardless of that, it does give the DRebel some much needed additional features, especially FEC. The One-Shot is also very nice. All the rest is icing on the cake.
Enjoy your new camera! And welcome to team Rebel!

Revert to the original firmware? I'm sure all you do is download the official firmware off the canon website and install it the same way as the firmware hack or which ever method they have posted there.

I have heard that once that the hack has been installed and implemented in a way that is different than the original software that in order to revert to the original - one must specify in the hack - original default settings ..... ie. an unaltered hack version. If that is true one must know what exact changes have been made in order to revert to original. I suppose that would change depending upon what version of the hack one is using. I don't know if this is true or not. |

It's been working fine for me. I had it installed since my original post on the 2nd of June. I've not noticed any adverse effects.
I did have to send my 300D off to Canon recently because my shutter broke. I have to admit, I was using mirror lockup when it broke. However, it had taken 11,500 frames in about 7 months, so I'm not sure if the incidents are related.
Before sending it off to Canon I flashed it back with legitimate firmware (see below), and didn't have any complaints from Canon.
One good point I think EddyG (?) made, was that reverting to the original firmware is fine, as long as your camera isn't frozen or has some other issue that prevents it. In this case there's no way to get it back, and Canon are going to be pretty suspicious if you try getting it repaired under warranty!

I think there's a new beta, which fixed a couple of minor issues, but no significant advancement. I was really hoping for Ai-Servo too. :-(

You can't revert to the identical firmware, because I don't think 1.0.0 is available on the web. However, v1.1.1 is available here:

Correct.
Quote from here:
"1) Reset all the CF to the original 300D settings. Note: you cannot use the Reset option in the menu, it does not affect the CF's. Below is a list of default binary values from left to right (The bottom numbers in the CF menu):
0,0,0,0,0,1,0,11,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0"
So you need to set the numbers above in the Custom Function (C.Fn) menu.
See disclaimer above. ;)

I had an EOS 300D Digital Rebel for exactly 1 week before I took it back to the shop. It's a perfectly servicable camera but I really didn't expect the metering modes to be so inflexible and I didn't expect it not to have features like flash exposure compensation. Worst of all it has a real tendancy towards underexposing flash photos. I took photos of my sister's wedding this weekend and almost every single picture was underexposed to some degree. Those that weren't were overexposed because I was wrestling with the camera trying to get some light in the right half of the histogram.
All in all the underexposing problem combined with the lack of some features that I have grown accustomed to in my humble Powershot S50 left me feeling strongly that this wasn't the camera for me.
I placed my order for an EOS 10D this morning.

... You do know the firmware allows the 300D to support FEC?

Indeed I do. But I'd rather not install hacked firmware if I can avoid it and the camera annoyed me so much - particularly with the underexposure problem - that I decided to take it back.

Oh right, my apologies. Just assuming you were interested in the firmware, since you posted in this thread. :)

I just bought my Rebel a few days ago. I also installed the hacked firmware. I is working great but I'm unsure I understand the AF options. In the readme file I see this:
AF OS - ONEShot
AF SE - AIservo (dosn't work right now)
AF AI - AIfocusAF
I'm assuming that AF AI is the default setting for AF. What is ONEShot and AIservo? |

One shot means that it will focus only once when you half press the shutter, and will not refocus, even if you recompose, as long as you hold the shutter release down.
AF AI, is the default setting of the camera (without the hack) and will refocus if you recompose or if your subject moves. Basically the AF will go into AI Servo. This doesn't always work.
Selectable AI Servo does not work on the 300D, but if it did, it would constantly refocus as your subject moved. It is available only in sports mode, or if the auto AF AI kicks in.
Hope this helps.

I have to say I didn't know what firmware was until I clicked on this thread. I have had the version 1.1.1. on my camera the whole time since I bought it from Circuit City last December. I don't think I have 3200 ISO or FEC. I've never used any of those anyway, or the
AF OS - ONEShot
AF SE - AIservo (dosn't work right now)
AF AI - AIfocusAF
I don't know what that is. |

Can anyone help me with the firmware hack. I downloaded it and put it on my camera. It's the same thing. It didn't unlock anything. Did I do something wrong? I didn't get any custom function menus or make use of the FEC. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks. |

Where did you get it? From the Russian site? When you loaded it into the camera, how did you do it? Look at the last menu, it should be down at the bottom of the list.
I'll try to help but i need more info.

Hello. Ok I downloaded it from the russian site then used the USB cable to get the files from the computer to the memory card in the camera. Opened the CFC door when file was done loading, then closed it and the LCD came up with instructions for updating. So I followed them and the only thing was at the end it did not show last version and the new version. But will they both be Firmware ver.1.1.1.?

The firmware does not show as a different version in the menu. The easiest way to check if it worked is to hit the ISO button. The ISO 3200 setting will appear as an "H" right after 1600. |
