to put it simply, read the challenge description and try to shoot to that, make sure you click the link for either advanced or basic editing (depending on which rules set it's running under) so that you are in compliance with the rules and are not risking a dq.
Probably one of the most important tutorials for beginners is here, which tells you how to get the image size and file size requirements on your shot, although keep in mind the allowable size limits have changed since this was made but the process remains the same. Nothing will vote your shot down faster than not using all the allowable pixels. Hope this is helpful.
