Time for another 'In the style of...' challenge?

I couldn't think of a better portfolio to browse through for inspiration than this one:

Nixter's portfolio

Such a depth of unbelievable work.

And that's the perfect shot for it, Sarah.

This is a challenge that would push a lot of people to expand their boundaries, and I'd love to see it come up soon.

Definitely, excellent choice.

Would anyone care to *define* the "style of Nixter"? Can you put it in a nutshell? I have some ideas, but I am curious what others think.

Well, it's a characteristic, but it's more a technique than a style... For sure, the "signature" Nixter is a B/W image, but that's just a surface characteristic. There's one more "technique" or "surface characteristic" that seems to inhabit a LOT of his best images, and that is "contre jour"; he revels in backlighting, and in projected shadows. But, again, that's just technique.

Besides all that, what's the *essence* of Nixter, emotively?

Our lives are anonymous yet surrounded by life; both lonely and engaged, empty and fulfilled.

Good question - I'm not sure this is an answer but for me, when I look at his work I become aware of photography as a process rather than a product... i.e. If I were to try to produce images that have a similar feel, I'd have to try to see differently, point my eyes in different places, stand in different areas, embrace different lighting situations, care less about the things I care about in my images, care more about the things that make his images special. In short, if this challenge were to come up - I'd feel I'd have to be a different me, not just shoot a different shot.

I don't think that's impossible - I remember when I first got my Lensbaby, I became aware that to be successful with that it wasn't enough to just use the lens to create an effect, I needed to 'see' differently, to notice and focus on different things and plan different compositions - an external observer would've seen my head making different patterns than it does with a more conventional lens mounted.

I frequently look at his work and think, had I been dropped in that moment in time and space, with a camera in my hand - I wouldn't have seen the shot - I'd have remained ignorant of that possibility.

I suppose I im saying that 'In the style of Nixter' would be more about changing your style of photography than it would be about changing the sort of image you offer. Does that make any sense at all?

I have often thought we should call these proposals "Through the Eye of..." rather than "In the Style of..."

Yes, with the emphasis more on drawing inspiration from rather than imitating.

Light, life, moments. As with all really outstanding photographers, Nick truly makes the most of the light (and shadow), and uses that to capture a moment in time, a glimpse of life (or a life). Add it all together and quite often it result in a wee bit o' magic.

OK then. Let's get out there and start shooting :)

It's really funny that this challenge is advanced and the other is basic. Don't you think?
08/25/2010 12:11:53 AM · #19
Seriously?

I like Nixter's stuff (very much, in fact), but the man's only entered SIXTY-FOUR challenges in FOUR YEARS!

How's this supposed to work?

Somebody better tell Nick. :-) I do believe he's still out wandering the world at the moment.

Yeah, he's in Italy I think. Damn. Shouldn't be able to get anything good there, should he?

Crap. Italy, huh? Well, it would be interesting to see if he can win his own challenge. :-)

It seems like he likes the perspective from above looking down and likes curves. Ill look more :) love the work.

Not to add to that at all, but you know you really need to do well in this challenge ;)
