I've always wonder why there is such a big breach between the average vote of participants and the average vote of non-participants. If we look carefully, there is always a ~0.5-1.0 difference in the final score.

This is a site for entertainment, we don't win anything except for the satisfaction of displaying our artwork, and seeing our photographs rated and discussed. Therefore, if people are only here to win, then the whole idea of DPC falls apart. We all like to win, of course, but if you can't accept other people shooting better pictures thank you, at least refrain from voting. I don't mind getting a 1 or a 10 , if it's really what you think that's what the picture deserves (although I do like to get comments when they vote with 1 or 2, so I know what's so wrong with my picture, and I learn from it). But if you think "Oh, this is a very cool image, but I want to win, so instead of giving it an 8 I'll give it a 5...", then you're misunderstanding the nature of DPC.

Sometimes I think maybe DPC should not allow participants to vote. That way, we would all get the rating other people indifferently give us. Let me tell you, all the scores would go up. It's sad to see that some marvelous photographs sometimes even win a challenge with an average of only 7, or even less. What does it take to get an average of 8 or 9? (I don't say 10, because that would be impossible).

What do you think?

You know this is a subject that comes up every week, right?

I also notice that participants average is usually lower, however I have also seen many where it is higher. I personally have more interest in the challenges I am entered in. I enjoy seeing how others approached the topic, and would vote less if I could not vote on those challenges. Unless my own entry is doing extremely well, my own voting average in a given challenge is usually better than what I am getting. We all like higher numbers. Others are harsher, but it evens out in the rankings.

It's only natural to judge other's work by what we perceive our one work to be worth.

I don't vote photos lower than they deserve when I'm participating in a challenge, but sometimes I vote photos higher than they deserve when I'm not participating.

i agree to a point, but my thought was more along the lines of those entering have an idea already in their mind of what fits the challenge...anything different makes them naturally pause, so does this make them question their own entry now? And if they are questioning their own idea/execution, does this make them feel they have to "defend' their choice by giving the other photos a "tougher" vote? Just my thought. ~Personally, I'm a bit more generous in those challenges I've entered as most ideas/execution are much better than mine! :P

Looks like those commenters were skewing things. Maybe we should get rid of them! ;)

That would sure make MY job easier :-)

edit to add:

I almost never think of my own image when voting in a challenge I've entered. Also, I'm always more interested in voting challenges I've entered because, well, I entered them because they were more interesting to me. Besides, in most cases, it's like comparing apples with oranges. Of course, it's impossible not to when there is an image similar to mine, especially if it's better than mine! I (still) don't have a problem recognizing work that is better than mine. But ask me again in another year :-)

What do you think?

I think that's the instant conculsion when those stats show up, but I don't think that's what's going on at all. People who have a vested interest in a challenge (becuase they have an entry of their own in it) are naturally going to view the other entries with a more discriminating eye. And I think that's all there is to it. If there were truly the kind of conspiratorial voting going on that you're describing, the difference would show up in full points, not fractions thereof.

Yes, I know I'm responding to a three week old question.
