It's been exactly 25 years ago but the catastrophe of the Chernobyl accident stroke back into people's memories when in march an earthquake struck the Fukushima power plant in Japan and caused widespread radiation contamination.
At that time I was in Russia visiting a friend, and later on the trip was planning on continuing my photo documentary about people who still live in the contaminated area west of the city of Chernobyl. My third trip to the "zone", just 2 weeks after the accident in Japan, had suddenly changed its significance...

Take a minute and check out my documentary about life in the contiminated zone on flickr:

A beautiful set of photos Chris. Shooting with film was a good choice, it adds to the archive/decay feel of the personalities and places. What camera/film did you use for these?

One thing that struck me was the lack of graffiti on the decaying buildings. My favorite photos were the one with a few children at the mall (quite a different scene than a mall here) and the photo with children playing in the street.

My only critique is (although the photos speak well enough for themselves) I would like to read more commentary - especially on the photos with people.

Overall, a work to be proud of... well done!

Heartfelt congratulations!
The picture with the bonbon Lenin might be the best introduction to the country.
Thank you

The film question you should already know. From appearances it would be Fuji PRO 160S but not all the shots retain the full frame from the scan, assuming its real. They were in the photog's 6x7 group so i make the assumption it wasnt added.

' Mephisto on an excellent photo essay (including all those you posted on Flickr). They collectively give an 'every day' quality to the continuing tragedy that occurred there. And yes, when you have the time, more commentary would add even greater depth to these moving images.

Great set as always, I've always been fascinated by Chernobyl and its desolation.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!
The choice for film was made long ago, in fact I haven't picked up my digital cameras for nearly 3 years now.
The pictures with film frame were taken last year on a Mamiya 645 Pro TL camera using Fuji Pro series film.
The rest were taken this march with Fuji GW670 II camera using Kodak Portra series film.

I'll add more infos to the photos later. I was already happy when I managed to process, scan, edit and upload the whole series in time for the memorial day.
In case you missed it (because it's not so obvious) there's some general infos about the project and the places I photographed on the left of the album overview if you click on the link.
