Have the opportunity to purchase this secondhand.
Have copied this from the add.

Is this a good machine (not up with Macs)

Warranty:

It has AppleCare on it until August 29, 2013, so if anything goes wrong with it, take it to any Apple store for servicing, and it won't cost you a cent, regardless of the issue.

Specs are as follows:

2.93GHz i7 Intel Processor (Quad-Core, very fast)
12GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM (Upgraded all the RAM myself, its top of the line brand RAM and this allows the machine to multitask like there's no tomorrow)
2TB SATA HDD (Plenty of space for movies, games, documents, music etc etc)
ATI Radeon HD5750 1GB DDR5 VRAM Video Card (Not super top of the line, but will do anything a basic to moderate user throws at it, and most high end user functions as well)
vThe iMac is running 10.7.2, which is the latest updated version of Lion.

What you get if you purchase:

Mid-2010 27" iMac
Power Cable
Apple Bluetooth Mouse
Apple Bluetooth Keyboard
Mac OS X Installation and Recovery Discs
iLife (iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb) install disc
Black screen cleaning cloth
Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter (incase you want to put a second display onto it)
BONUS: I will also give you a 1TB External HD and FireWire cable, great for Time Machine Backups!

you could love it , or hate it...if you never had a Mac before. ( I love mine)

Ask Apple (or maybe someone on DPC knows for sure) if his DIY Upgrade effect AppleCare?

It sounds like a pretty nice system. Whether it's a good value or not depends on his price. I don't think it is that much slower than the current crop of iMacs, but it does not have the Thunderbolt port that the latest ones do. What this means is the fastest connection to an external hard drive you can have is with Firewire 800, which is a good deal faster than USB2 but not as fast as USB3. Thunderbolt HDs are only just now starting to trickle into the market, but their connection will be every bit as fast as an internal HD. Just something to consider when comparing its price to a new iMac.

You might want to also consider where the iMac is going to go and whether glare on that glossy screen would be a problem. The glossy screen is a deal breaker for me in my situation and I use a MacBook connected to an older anti-glare Apple Cinema display instead. It's really too bad Apple doesn't offer ant-glare screens with the iMacs.

I don't think there will be any issue with his changing the RAM and causing a breach of the warranty- Apple is okay with this as long as the process doesn't physically break something.

I think you'll like the Mac OS though. I switched from Windows four years ago and never looked back. I felt right at home after a couple of weeks on the Mac.

It's a fantastic configuration. That particular model will outrun all but the current top of the line iMac in Photoshop, and the upgrades are ideal for that purpose. If the price is anywhere reasonable, it's hard to go wrong with that system.

Better than my Macbook Pro!!! Wish I had an iMac to replace my dinosaur Windows machine! Great machine, so will all come down to the price! I loved switching to Mac and just converted Mom and sis to Mac users! :~)

I have that exact same computer on my desk right now, although I'm typing this on my Lenovo laptop. You'll have way more RAM though.
It's a thing of beauty, and a joy to use. Photoshop on it is just wonderful.....I love doing all my post processing on it.
You really cant go wrong, with such a superb computer.
Enjoy it!
